Jane Eyre
question
Annotating... Any tips????

I have to read this as a summer reading book going into 9th grade honors English. We have a lot of work to do on this, including annotating. I am terrible at annotating, and I find that rather than helping me remember, it only interrupts my flow, making it harder to concentrate and keep track of what I have read. I have found that annotating short things is much easier, because you can re-read, but with all the other work, I don't have time to read it through twice. Any tips?

My suggestion is post=it notes. Buy yourself a couple different colors. As you read, tag word definitions with one color, and social/culture questions with another. You could also tag them on the top edge or the side edge. Then when you're don reading just go to each post-it one by one.

Also, if you don't want to break your flow of reading, maybe just underlying passages that feel significant as you're reading and then go back to the underlined parts later and scribble notes in the margins.
Go with your gut. If it sounds quotable - underline it!

This definitely sounds helpful, we do have to look for specific things, so this might just work! Especially if I use post it notes as well, then I can

Whenever I have to annotate books for school I try to think of what the teacher expects. Try to read slowly and notice
-Turning points
-Figurative or significant language
At the beginning and end of each chapter I like to stop collect my thoughts and write them down.
When you are stuck ask yourself these questions
-Why was that significant
-How is this going to change the main characters
If you have specific things to look for keep that list out and return to it at the end of each chapter.
Annotating is also made easier if you use sticky notes.
I hope this helps and that you enjoy the book. Jane Eyre is a great read!

I'm just glad you know what the word means. I recently mentioned annotating a book to my nephew who is in high school and he looked at me like I had eaten my hat.
For my own personal pleasure, I find myself (at too many years past school to mention) underling, making notes, marking with Post It's, and dog earring pages in many of the books I read.

I don't like underlining in books, I find it very distracting when reading again. Post it notes are better, and you can have them so they're visible when the book is closed, so you can go straight to the page.
I'd also recommend keeping a separate sheet of paper with brief reminders of what you've noted, e.g, 'Jane's thoughts on Blanche, p.120.'
But time permitting I'd always recommend reading twice, once to get to know the plot and characters, the second time for the more technical aspects.

What I did in school was annotate what I thought was important to the story or what quotes I liked that I could include in papers. I also highlighted or underlined important parts that characters said, and then off to the side margin wrote my thoughts/analyzed their importance. Annotating is a really helpful tool when studying literature in a class. Its a good way to refresh the book by looking over what you noted, especially if required to write any essays. Notes are an easy way to find examples to prove your point in a paper. Hope this helps!
