I watched BBC's GMT news program today, where a journalist named Steve Rosenberg interviewed Mikhail Gorbachev on the new chill (not yet cold) war between the West and Russia. I wonder if anyone found any irony about someone named Rosenberg discussing Russian nuclear weapons?
I just saw that Lindsay Hoyle has been elected to replace John Bercow in the House of Commons. Finally, Parliament can be said to be following the rules, according to Hoyle.

Sorry, I missed the program, Joel. My neighbors, Julius and Ethel, missed it also.

The Ohio House on Wednesday passed the "Student Religious Liberties Act." Under the law, students can't be penalized if their work is scientifically wrong as long as the reasoning is because of their religious beliefs. Instead, students are graded on substance and relevance.
I see a lot of future Republican Senators coming out of Ohio.

This kind of thing makes me so mad I have trouble joking about it. This is how we get ignorant idiots, whose vote counts just as much as anyone else's (more if they live in Wyoming vs. CA, for example).

Too late! Don't you remember the "Journal of Irreproducible Results"? Founded in 1955 and still publishing sporadically in the early years of this century. It even has a Wikipedia entry. See also its rival, the "Annals of Improbable Research".

Good tip, Martin. I'll look them up.
In the meantime, I'm going to make absolutely certain to avoid any doctors who went to school in Ohio. Faith healers don't work in hospitals for good reason.

2 prison guards charged with conspiracy and filing false records on the night of Jeffrey Epstein's death
The charges come more than three months after Epstein was found dead at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, a federal detention facility in lower Manhattan. The multimillionaire was awaiting trial on federal charges accusing him of operating a sex trafficking ring... New York City's chief medical examiner ruled his August 10 death a suicide by hanging, though a former medical examiner hired by Epstein's legal team has disagreed with that conclusion.
Why do I get the feeling that we haven't heard the last of a story concerning the suicide of someone rich, powerful, and politically connected who was running a
sex trafficking ring????
Maybe it's just a crazy notion.

There is absolutely no equivalency here. In China, it's entirely legal for the authorities to shoot protesters.

I think what's more distressing is the large number of people who refuse to believe evidence that any rational person would view as irrefutable, instead favoring conspiracies that have been repeatedly debunked by numerous and authoritative sources.
Example: Over 400,000 people worked on the Apollo missions to:
1. send astronauts to the moon.
-OR-
2. to make a movie on a sound stage.
If you believe the latter, please explain how the government convinced 400,000 people to keep the secret of this monumental conspiracy? Perhaps, they threatened to have Bigfoot kick these scientists, engineers and technicians off the Flat Earth right through a thick layer of Chem Trails into Loch Ness. After all, nothing scares educated people more than mythological BS.

Since we had a few relatively minor disagreements with an English king flare up a bit from 1775 to 1783, perhaps it's more diplomatic if we don't comment on this:

I didn't see any harm, Joel, so I asked her.

Global measles deaths rise to 140,000; young kids hit hard
"The fact that any child dies from a vaccine-preventable disease like measles is frankly an outrage and a collective failure to protect the world's most vulnerable children," said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreysus, PhD, director-general of the WHO...
The above figure does not count the children who were blinded, became deaf. or suffered other complications from measles, such as pneumonia and encephalitis.
Measles cases tripled in the US last year according to the latest CDC report . Therefore, I believe the meme above highlights an excellent idea, and we should formalize:
PUNCH AN ANTI-VAXXER DAY!

Include mumps in the above. Recent announcements in the British press report a similar three- to four-fold increase in mumps in young adults. The generation whose parents were misguidedly influenced by the irrational MMR vaccine scare in the late 1990s.

Third World countries that are doing the best they can with limited resource are slowly but surely making progress, and we should continue to offer what assistance we can.
As to the more affluent countries...
Amazing, isn't it! The WHO, CDC, NIH, and similar organizations around the world spend billions each year to hire the top minds in biology, chemistry, and medical specialties, and exhaustively research human health. Yet, a new mother much too often prefers to get her medical advice from some anecdotal story on social media that was posted by another paranoid mother who is only qualified to diagnose a rainy day if someone points her toward a window and she has some confirming assurances from her Aunt Bessie!
The only cure for such ignorance may be fighting fire with fire. All of the parents who did vaccinate their kids should post on social media:
'My vaccinated children are alive and healthy.'
Let's have that go viral!

Fortunately, we live in a free country where
Mike Bloomberg can spend a half-billion dollars or more on campaign ads.
Mike Bloomberg’s election spending spree tells an ugly story
Just how much does it cost to buy the US presidency? $800m? A billion? A couple of billion? ...It looks as if Michael Bloomberg is trying to find out.

Texas closes hundreds of polling sites, making it harder for minorities to vote
...analysis finds that the 50 counties that gained the most Black and Latinx residents between 2012 and 2018 closed 542 polling sites, compared to just 34 closures in the 50 counties that have gained the fewest black and Latinx residents. This is despite the fact that the population in the former group of counties has risen by 2.5 million people, whereas in the latter category the total population has fallen by over 13,000.
Once again, the Republican Party appears to be influenced by that famous quote,
"One man, one vote."
, "We have nothing to fear but brown people."
