Well, small local positions come cheap, and very part time. I've been serving on the school board for 8 years now, and spent about $100 of my own money for my reelection (I was appointed the first time as--illustration of Scott's point--no one wanted to run). It takes a few hours a week; less most of the time, more at a few key times of year. And local offices are hugely important. I would encourage anyone to consider getting involved on that level (okay, I know it's harder in big cities, but for the rest of us, there aren't that many excuses).
That said, I cannot go on to higher office. Not only do I hate politics, I suck at it. And I have a fair amount of face-blindness, so I can't recognize the people who schmooze with me.
I have been on a kazillion boards and commissions. Most of them are not publicly elected positions. If someone wants to get involved locally there are many choices. The hospital board for me was the most fun....good food, paid vacations, and spectacular gifts.I think I may have some face blindness also. It takes me many encounters to lock in someone.
