A bit depressed today... Sometimes, it's genuinely difficult to have faith that humanity and decency are cultural norms.

Shifting Dollars From Poor to Rich Is a Key Part of the Senate Health Bill
The bill’s largest benefits go to the wealthiest Americans, who have the most comfortable health care arrangements, and its biggest losses fall to poorer Americans who rely on government support.

Statistics vary somewhat with each election, but in excess of 60% of congressional seats are held by millionaires. Why is anyone surprised that they would vote themselves a large tax break?

At the same time, just under 50% of births in this country are paid for by Medicare (prenatal and maternity care), which is about to be severely cut in order to fund this tax break for our wealthiest citizens.

50%...That's half of the next generation being told that they're on their own. And let's be honest, most state budgets are already strained. Your governor will not be picking up the slack for this loss of federal funding.

Medicaid is also the only healthcare for roughly 40 million children in the US. Perhaps we should start teaching them not to ever get sick or injured.

“Simply put, if there’s a chance you might get sick, get old, or start a family ― this bill will do you harm... And small tweaks over the course of the next couple weeks, under the guise of making these bills easier to stomach, cannot change the fundamental meanness at the core of this legislation.”
President Barack Obama

In terms of our nation's wealth, the top 1% own more than the bottom 90%. This economic reality is not sustainable, and the best that we can hope for is that the coming backlash is political (i.e. votes, not violence).

One Possible Solution: In the interest of restoring compassion in government, I propose a constitutional amendment requiring that candidates must experience a layoff from their primary employment, must exhaust their savings as they fail to find comparable employment, and then must work three minimum wage jobs to support their family for a year before they are permitted to run for a congressional seat.

I'd settle for the current members being forced to share the same shitty healthcare plan they want to foist on the rest of us.

Bannon: Catholic Church needs ‘illegal aliens to fill the churches’
"...they need illegal aliens to fill the churches,” Bannon said in an interview with Charlie Rose that will air on "60 Minutes” on CBS on Sunday. “It's obvious on the face of it.”

Since he was unable to secure himself a position as "The Power Behind the Throne," it appears Bannon is attempting to reinvent himself as "The Mouth That Roared." However, in fairness, he has made a valiant effort to attack or offend nearly everyone on the planet. In fact, the only group that he's missed is toddlers. I think this should be corrected immediately.

Toddlers, Steve -- they must be bad for the country somehow.

The world as we know it is about to end — again
Unsealed, an evangelical Christian publication, foretells the Rapture in a viral, four-minute YouTube video, complete with special effects and ominous doomsday soundtrack. It’s called “September 23, 2017: You Need to See This.”

NASA and every astronomer worldwide disagrees due to a complete lack of evidence. (Oh...and they're sane.) However, the entrepreneurial community can't seem to pass up this marketing opportunity.

Views among college students regarding the First Amendment: Results from a new survey
Freedom of expression is deeply imperiled on U.S. campuses. In fact, despite protestations to the contrary (often with statements like “we fully support the First Amendment, but…), freedom of expression is clearly not, in practice, available on many campuses, including many public campuses that have First Amendment obligations.

First off, since when have kids known what they're talking about????

However, (if this small survey is indeed accurate) I find it disturbing that so many college students find it acceptable to suppress views that they oppose. What sort of adults will these people make?

QUESTION: Is it no longer taught in school that one can listen to someone's opposing opinion, then casually turn to your friends and open a discussion with: "That speaker is a moron?"
