They're paying money to spend a week in Cleveland during the hottest summer ever. Isn't that punishment enough?

Donald Trump Adviser Says Hillary Clinton Should Be Shot By Firing Squad [for treason]

At what point exactly did the Republican Party become just too ridiculous for words?

The election isn't until November. What's next in the coming months, a recommendation for the guillotine, or that we launch Hillary into the sun?

The convention has really turned into a Hillary Hate-a-thon, what with Christie's mock trial and all the cries of "Lock her up!"

It does seem strange that the speakers are talking more about her than the nominee. I'm guessing it's because no one can think of anything good to say about Donald.

Finally - a Republican with balls! Who'da thunk it'd be this guy?

description

I like to think his failure to endorse the candidate was all payback for Trump's remarks about his wife, but . . . I'm pretty sure it was only to further his own politcal career.

Cruz was just the focus, a bit of PR spin to keep people from realizing that many...I say, MANY...Republican heavyweights withheld their endorsement. Many are simply embarrassed that the party put Trump forth as a candidate.

Another embarrassment:

Every news outlet is fact-checking Trump's acceptance speech, and none have found his speech...er...uh...shall we say...based on a preponderance of truth. A few examples:

Wall Street Journal

Politico

CBS News

...and many more US and foreign news agencies.

Republicans are LITERALLY stating that their chosen candidate is an embarrassment to the party and a well-documented liar, but they don't care.

On the upside, the convention was able to recycle some very colorful buttons.

Opinions please.

I watch the PBS Newshour regularly. One of their conservative commentators, David Brooks, made an interesting comment concerning the highly publicized dissension at both the GOP and DEM conventions. He said (paraphrasing) that many of the delegates and voters were not on message or falling in line because social media is replacing traditional political party organizations.

Do you think that's true?

message 859: by Will (new)

Will Once (willonce) | 445 comments I've heard similar comments from others. I wouldn't say that social media is wholly replacing political parties - not quite yet - but it is certainly becoming more important. Whenever something big happens, say the Presidential election or the UK's referendum on EU membership, people are talking about it on social media more than ever before.

This may be contributing to what is being called "post truth politics" where people are taking firmly entrenched views based more on emotion than facts. Our view of the world is being coloured by what we see on social media, but we don't always realise that social media is self-selecting. What we see on facebook and twitter is often what we have chosen to see. This can help to confirm what we already believe, regardless of the facts.

The other thing that is happening is that we are seeing new questions which don't fall neatly into party lines. Issues like immigration, terrorism and equality are dividing political parties all over the world. We seem to be splitting into many different tribes where traditional two party politics doesn't seem sophisticated enough to capture all the differences of opinion.

Some good points, Will.

However, many countries operate with a 'many party' system, and they don't seem to be faring any better than us. How far can the political system be factionalized before it's not representative, it's irrelevant?

There's not much to poke fun at this week, since the DNC is featuring nonthreatening, impassioned, heart-rending, and intentionally funny speeches.

I've been thinking a lot about the future and all the shenanigans that may be in store for us . . .

I predict that Donald and Roger Ailes will join forces to launch TRUMP Network. O'Reilly and Hannity will jump the sinking FOX ship to join the new all-white, all-male network. The prime-time lineup will feature Trumpian tweets about current events, infomercials for Trump products, and monthly Junior Miss beauty pageants where Donald can shop for a new wife.

2028 will bring us another Presidential campaign; this time the candidates will be Ivanka Trump (R), Chelsea Clinton (D), and Bristol Palin representing Nonsensical Party.

This might all occur four years earlier if President Kanye screws the pooch, and video of that happening is released to The National Enquirer.

Anyone else have any predictions?

Brena Mercer | 617 comments The Democrat Party has always attracted whack-job candidates. That is why they set up the super-delegate system. They are experienced people who evaluate if the person represents long term party goals and can be effective. The Republican party will have to put in place some way of vetting their candidates so this fiasco doesn't happen again. If Trump is elected there probably won't be another election, and we will all be hanging off refugee boats.

Trump's support is horrifying. Who are these people? If you watched the RNC, they are mostly redneck white supremacy groups. Problem is there are a lot of those people.

I'm frankly terrified of what's going to happen when (notice - I said "when" not "if") he loses. He has egged his supporters on to violence before, and his accusations of "The election will be rigged!" are sure to light some fires. I'm expecting everything from riots at Hillary's inauguration to assassination attempts.

Many of them are convinced she's the devil, after all.

Brena Mercer | 617 comments This election just keeps getting weirder and weirder. Trump's manager, Paul Malafort, has managed dictators and criminals. He said he is completely creeped out by Trump. He thinks he is too mentally unstable to make it through the next 3 months. Trump has a lot of money riding on this. He funded his campaign with a loan and is double dipping on paying himself back.

Trump was funny before he became a threat. I hope we can get back to him just being the butt of jokes.

Brena wrote: "He thinks [Trump] is too mentally unstable to make it through the next 3 months..."

What a rousing endorsement for a candidate!!

I thought what was more telling about the GOP convention was the amazing number of prominent-Republican absentees. Not a single, ex-President, none of the Republican congressional elite, none of the traditional deep-pocket contributors, and no babies!

Also, many in the press corps were refused entry. Doesn't this seem rather strange coming from a man who is intent on taking an oath to uphold the Constitution...including the First Amendment.

There's no doubt that the GOP knows their screwed. Now, they just have to figure out what to do next. It'll be interesting to watch.

As to your comment: "Trump's support is horrifying. Who are these people? If you watched the RNC, they are mostly redneck white supremacy groups."

That's a somewhat unfair characterization. The correct term is Neanderthal.
