Sheila (sheilaj) Great in that case, now that I understand how it works I would gladly volunteer to be a captain if you need some more.

Logan (loganturner) | 1643 comments The only thing I'm not quite clear on is how a winner is chosen. Do we get points for each book our team reads each week that either defends the hit or gets banked?

And to make sure I have this right, each team member can only count one book read per firing?

Say only one team is firing on us, one person reads to defend the hit, the other six pair off to get a salvo. If everyone finishes their books early, they can't read any more books to gain more banked points, right? But if every team accomplishes this, who wins?

Yes.

Logan wrote: "And to make sure I have this right, each team member can only count one book read per firing?"

Yes, one book read a week per person. How you strategize is up to you.

Logan wrote: "Say only one team is firing on us, one person reads to defend the hit, the other six pair off to get a salvo. If everyone finishes their books early, they can't read any more books to gain more banked points, right? But if every team accomplishes this, who wins?"

Well, don't forget about SLOOPS... so, that may throw your pairing idea off. Nor will everyone strategize the same. Also, we don't think the likelihood of everyone getting a "hit" is going to happen. Remember, of 100 spaces, only 50 have a genre within a square.

There might be a tie or two, but this is the first time we've done this. Let's wait and see.

message 64: by Logan (new)

Logan (loganturner) | 1643 comments Okay, thanks. So each team member can read for a Salvo AND a Sloop each week if they want?

And if you get fired on and you don't get hit, you read a Reader's Choice to earn a point for your own team, but the team firing on you doesn't get a point for the "hit" right?

Sorry - all my questions came late! :)

Logan wrote: "Okay, thanks. So each team member can read for a Salvo AND a Sloop each week if they want?"

Correct.Incorrect!

A team may earn both a SLOOP and a SALVO, but not any one member may NOT read more than one book a week and have it count for BBB.

Absolutely "dead on target." (Pun intended.)

Not a problem, Logan. I'm sure there will be more.

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments I have a question about when reading books start. In the rules it says the mod will post who by midnight, but the challenges will be at 12pm on Fri. Does that mean we wait until noon to post where we want to hit and have that 12 hours to decide where? Or does it mean we have until noon to post where we want to hit the other teams?

What is the rule for when a book is started? Is the same day all right if you have started a book that will fit, or do you need to wait until a hit is actually made? we have a person in Australia trying to figure out time differences.

message 68: by Moderators of NBRC, Challenger-in-Chief (last edited Mar 05, 2014 02:51PM) (new)

Moderators of NBRC | 33502 comments Mod
You need to post at noon EST PST where you want your hit to be on another team(s). Please do NOT post before, as this gives a team a planning advantage. If there is a timezone issue, get another member to post, or tell the NBRC Ninja your target(s) in advance and he'll post for you.

I'll give you a bit of a grace period, but not much. What do you think is fair? One hour? After that, your team will be penalized by having to walk the plank. ...or maybe with having to read an extra book from your least favorite genre? Or something more terrifying.

message 69: by Logan (new)

Logan (loganturner) | 1643 comments Eastern or Pacific time? I thought we were going PST.

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments The time zone issue is for starting a book not posting. The member is finishing up a book tomorrow, which for her is March 7th and I am just trying to figure out if she starts a new book right away but doesn't finish it until after our March 7th, would it still count?

I am in PST, so posting should be fine. In the rules you say PST, but your last post just said EST which would be 9am here. Which one is it? I don't want to walk the plank. I will be posting at work, so a little leeway would probably be good, I can get it in within an hour of the set time.

My apologies! Confusing this challenge with another. Yes, it is Pacific Time. I edited it. Plus, there are hyperlinks to an international clock under the "Mission Control" thread and the "Firing On" thread. (Although, 12 hours different.)

Renee wrote: "What will happen if more than one team fires on my team and hit the same square?"

First come first posted as far as target, Renee. If another team posts that square first, your team must choose another. Probably best to have a Plan B.

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments Not too likely, but what if I need to post it at 11:50 instead of noon? I am on the front desk at work from 12-1 and usually have plenty of time to check up on GR during that hour, but if I think I will be too busy, can I post a few minutes early before I have to take over the desk? Should I PM Book Ninja instead in that case?

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments Just thought of another question since I am not sure how a person reads for a Salvo and a Sloop as mentioned in post 74:

Say that me, Book Ninja and LK are on a team and we are fired on twice.

Hit on square with S: I read
Hit on blank square, Reader's choice: Book Ninja reads RC book

Then,
If LK reads an S book, the team would earn a sloop.

Or,
If LK reads a RC book, the team earns a salvo.

Is this right?

Each person can only read one book, so LK can't read both of those books to earn a Salvo and a Sloop, right?

message 80: by Moderators of NBRC, Challenger-in-Chief (new)

Moderators of NBRC | 33502 comments Mod
In that example, Turtlecollector, if LK reads RC book, then it would also be a SLOOP, since (even though it is a "Reader's Choice) Book Ninja "made" it the hit-upon genre.

Since each team has seven members, if two other members read YA, and the remaining two members read MC, then these are both SALVOs, worth one point each set.

Further, if your team then made one of two "hits" on other teams, your points for that week would be as follows:
TEAM A
Dodged Direct
"Hits" "Hits" Sloops Salvos TOTAL
2 1 2 2 7

I am still deciding if one member can read a genre one week and pair it up with a book by the same genre the next week for a Salvo (and whether this could be done by the same person or a different one). I'll have me mind made up by Friday on this.

Sheila (sheilaj) I have a question is it OK if the genres are embedded as in mystery - crime counts for crime?

Also does it actually need to say romance - contemporary or can it say romance and take place in current times?

Thanks

message 86: by NBRC Book Ninja (new)

NBRC Book Ninja | 1025 comments Sheila wrote: "I have a question is it OK if the genres are embedded as in mystery - crime counts for crime?

At least ten people must 'tag' it as Crime. Even if another 100 people 'tag' it as Mystery, that makes no never-mind.

Sheila wrote: "Also does it actually need to say romance - contemporary or can it say romance and take place in current times?"

It needs to be 'tagged' Romance-Contemporary or Contemporary Romance.

If in doubt, or you want special consideration, ask the Mods to look at it in the Genre Questions, Reviews, & Double-Checks thread.

message 87: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) I don't think that answered my question. Does Crime have to stand alone or can it be embedded?

Sheila wrote: "Does Crime have to stand alone or can it be embedded?"

I'm not understanding your question, then, with regards to "stand alone". Many books on GRs have been shelved or 'tagged' as Crime but also shelved or 'tagged' as Mystery.

Why don't you give me an example of the book or books in question?

message 89: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) OK here is one although in this example 10 people haven't logged it as such. Would a book tagged like this count for crime?
Nobody Knows (KEY News #5) by Mary Jane Clark

Unfortunately, no. Close, though. Very close. It has been 'tagged' as:
murder-crime-mystery = 1 person
crime = 3 people
mystery-crime = 1 person
crime-mystery-thriller = 1 person
mystery-true-crime = 1 person
crime-detective = 1 person

TOTAL = 8 people

Thanks, great example. That one would be classed as Mystery though because 20 people tagged it as mystery, but less then 10 as crime. If it was a less read book and less than 10 people had tagged it in any one category, you could post it to the questions reviews & double checks thread to confirm what it classified as.

NBRC Book Ninja | 1025 comments For SF we will take books 'tagged' sci-fy, or sci-fi, or science-fiction.
