I believe that this is a short story that I read in college (1999-2003) in a book of Science Fiction short stories. I have no idea of when it was originally written.

Its was an alternative creation story. The was a world that very slowly died out and as they died they became one with the central being, or perhaps it was a computer. In the end the central being/computer is all alone in the dark trying to figure out what to do with itself. Then it says let there be light.
