Well they loose their telepathy in the second book, so although I wanted to see how they would manage it, I was okay that bit was not in the movie. But yeah, they needed to be a little closer. Maybe they will cover that at the start of the first one, like her helping him though everything with Chuck and everything....

message 102: by Sheena (new)

Sheena I loved the movie. Yeah there were changes, but they were understandable changes. I LOVED the grievers. They were way better than I even imagined. I will so be seeing the movie again! lol

message 103: by Z (new)

Z R (zuleymie) | 20 comments Honestly I felt like the character developments were awful. Like They didn't really say their names until the middle of a sentence and then I'd be like oh that's him! But also my two favorite characters Minho and Newt weren't really like they were in the book. Minho wasn't sassy and Newt was just all about the community and work and in the book he made me laugh a lot but in the movie I don't recall him saying anything funny just telling Thomas to work. I felt like Thomas and Newts friendship wasn't developed at all in the beginning it was kind of there but throughout the movie it was more like employer and boss relationship. And like other people have said Thomas and Teresa's relationship was nonexistent but other than that it was a good movie I guess

Cate (The Professional Fangirl) (chaostheory08) | 458 comments I liked the movie. I watched it twice over the weekend. :)

Sure, it's not the most faithful but at least it wasn't boring like the Divergent movie. Thomas Sangster-Brodie was a delight! The Minho guy was great too. :D

Sheena Zuleymie wrote: "Honestly I felt like the character developments were awful. Like They didn't really say their names until the middle of a sentence and then I'd be like oh that's him! But also my two favorite chara..."

I do agree with that. Though I did like the movie, one of my favorite characters was Minho, and a lot of that had to do with sassy attitude. And I do wish they would have emphasized Newt & Thomas' friendship more because it will help more once they get to the 3rd book and what happens.

But overall, I still enjoyed the movie. It was a lot more fast paced than Divergent, I agree. I liked how they made things look, from the glade to the grievers, etc. I'm excited for the next one. :-)

message 106: by Z (new)

Z R (zuleymie) | 20 comments Yeah the movie was really entertaining! I enjoyed it a lot afterwards at first I was like "that didn't happen in the book...that wasn't how it was...who the heck is that guy.." But afterwards I realized how good it was and I want to see it again! It honestly could have been worst but it wasn't!!!

Maryam | 4 comments Hey... Loved the book , probably most of you would agree that it is much better than the movie.. I was really upset when they cut off the telepathy thing, because it is so important .. The most thing i loved about the movie was the designs and the casting

I have to agree the telepathy was great in the book. But really, something like that would have been tough to make work on film. And since it is not something that continues through the rest of the books, I don't think it is super needed for the overall plot. By adding the conversation with Theresa and Thomas on top of the tower they covered a lot of things that helped fill the gap the telepathy left. I was super pleased with the whole movie! Much better than some of the other books that have been made into movies recently(divergent!!)

It's amazing! I want to go back to theaters and see it again since I saw a free early preview, but have not had the time yet. Maybe next weekend I can make it out to see it in theaters again. It will for sure be one I buy on DVD the day it comes out!!

Even Mr. Dashner said - albeit jokingly - that the film was better than the book. XD But really, I enjoyed the casting and the setting a LOT!

They for sure did not add much at all. There were a few things they changed a little to make it work, but nothing major that could not be justified. I love love LOVED it! I hope you get to see it soon and enjoy it! :D

Abby | 1 comments This book was so good and I can't wait to see the movie! If you are thinking about reading The Scorch Trials and The Death Cure go for it. They are so fantastic. I didn't like the ending of the series though but no spoilers from me!

message 118: by J (new)

J A | 86 comments I just watched the movie and I am disappointed. I am hoping it grows on me because I like the series so much, it just has a different vibe. It seems like they tried to simplify it to much, things aren't supposed be as easily explained as the movie makes them out to be.

message 119: by Dana, SuperMod (new)

Dana Burkey (danaburkey) | 1690 comments Mod
Yes, they did have to simplify things, but other wise it would have been a 5 hours movie.... I just watched it for the second time and although there were things that were changed, I think it worked great. Considering everything that happens in the next two books I feel like they had everything in the movie that needed to be there, and also did a good job of making the feel of everything great. Like the ending was perfect. I was so worried for that moment and they just did it wonderfully. I think I was more emotional about the ending when watching the movie then when I read the book!

message 120: by Ania (new)

Ania Snopek | 1 comments In the movie I've missed the most the relationships between the main characters: Thomas, Minho, Newt, Teresa etc. Because of this there was this hole in the movie, and the relationship seemed not true for me. They did too many cuts in here, because characters are really funny and interesting in book.
I don't mind that they didn't show the telepathy between Thomas and Teresa.
I liked the movie, I understand why some changes had to be made. I can't wait for the next part :)

message 124: by Maina (new)

Maina Im a little late to this one lol, but i just finished the book. there were things that i liked and things that drove me crazy. I liked the action and the curiosity that kept me turning the pages. I didn't feel a connection to any of the characters, except maybe chuck because he seemed to be the most genuinely scared. Their language drove me absolutely crazy...shuck, klunk? The grievers didn't seem all that scary to me and i had a hard time visualizing a blubbery blob rolling around with arms with weapons on them. I didn't like the constant questions worth lack of answers throughout the entire book. With other dystopian books that I've read, i would forget that they were geared toward a YA audience, but this one constantly reminded me that it was a book for teens. I'm going to watch the movie this week, mostly out of curiosity. I will probably skip the next book and just watch the movie.

Maina wrote: "Im a little late to this one lol, but i just finished the book. there were things that i liked and things that drove me crazy. I liked the action and the curiosity that kept me turning the pages...."

Okay...I know it sounds insane...but the questions keep building and building and that is one of the reasons you NEED to read the books!! I feel like there are two typed of unanswered questions in YA books. There are the kind that are unanswered because the author did not know the answer to them(prime example: the Divergent series) and then the type of unanswered questions that stay that way because the author knows the reader does not need to know yet(example: Maze Runner Series!)

By the end of the three books there are a TUN of unanswered questions, and a lot of them stay that way forever. However, some of them are answered in the book that comes before Maze Runner, The Kill Order. You can't start out by reading it though....then it will ruin a lot of the rest of the series.

I understand you might still not want to read the rest, but it is one of my favorite series thanks to the way Dashner did not feel the need to spell things out from the beginning or really baby the readers.

message 126: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (HannahJoLynn) | 11 comments I liked this book okay, and I finally got to watch the movie. I have to say, the book was better". There were some boring parts in the book that seemed to drag on forever, and I'm glad they took it out of the movie. But they also took some other stuff out that I think the needed to leave in. There was some stuff I was only being a nerd about (some of the stuff was out of order: Teresa showed up AFTER Thomas killed a griever), but THEY LEFT OUT THE PART WHERE THOMAS AND TERESA COULD TALK TO EACH OTHER TELEPATHICALLY!!! What's up wit that? DRIVES ME CRAZY!

message 127: by Jenny Jo (new)

Jenny Jo Weir The books were definetly page turners! I read all 3 but was seriously so upset about something that happens at the end of book 3 that I just couldnt make my self read the prequel sinceI was so upset about the end. I appreciated the movie since it really did help put a face to the grievers and what not. I think you would enjoy the books if you give them a chance.

You should definitely read the prequel. It was so good after it got started, although the end might make you mad as well.

message 129: by Jenny Jo (new)

Jenny Jo Weir DANA, were you also mad about a a certain few things in the end? I really am still having a hard time getting over this and it's been a minute.

Dana (harmonyslovehp) | 72 comments Jenny Jo wrote: "DANA, were you also mad about a a certain few things in the end? I really am still having a hard time getting over this and it's been a minute."

Yeah, there were things that made me mad and there were things that I still didn't understand after I had read the first three books and everything was cleared up whenever I read the prequel (well, except for what happens to the Gladers you know what.)

message 131: by Jenny Jo (new)

Jenny Jo Weir I was referring to more of the outcome of both female characters. Both things really bothered me to the point where everytime I started to read the prequel, I would just shut the book and blow air through my nose in frustration knowing how it ends. I hope someone else feels this too. I guess misery really does love company. LOL. But if you say it's worth it then I guess I can suck it up and pretend to be over it long enough to read it.

Rebecca Maina wrote: "Im a little late to this one lol, but i just finished the book. there were things that i liked and things that drove me crazy. I liked the action and the curiosity that kept me turning the pages...."

Totally completely agree with you!! Except the glader's language did not annoy me as much. But everything else, yeah totally!! I also had the maze figured out way early on, and was so frustrated that these "above average intelligence" kids could not figure it out. Really? You've been here for two years?

Thomas annoyed me, and Teresa annoyed me more. She was only there because Thomas was too slow to figure the maze out for himself.

It did take me awhile to get into the prequel, but I liked it once I started it. As for the end of the book involving the female characters, I didn't mind the outcome. One of the characters I couldn't stand after The Scorch Trials because of reasons you can probably figure out, but I liked who Thomas ended up with, mostly because I couldnt' stand the other character.

Lol. And I didn't like who he ended up with because she was involved with well you know. Ugh! I didn't really hate the first girl for the above mentioned although I can see how it bothered you. Thanks for your 2 cents :-) Feel free to friend me if you wish.

message 135: by Maina (new)

Maina I watched the movie today, and as much as the book drove me crazy, I definitely preferred it to the movie. I think if i hadn't read the book i would have been confused.
Likes:
I thought the casting was great. The characters were exactly what i expected.
The set was also spot on. The maze looked amazing, and the glade was perfect.

Dislikes:
I know they have to but they left out a lot-the cliff, the telepathy between Thomas and Theresa, and the description of how bad the world was outside of the maze.
I felt like there was less of a focus on the gladers' memories involving Thomas.

Just like the book, it was a good concept and had tons of potential, but i thought both the book and movie could have been better.

message 136: by Monkeylover (new)

Monkeylover | 49 comments I just watched the movie last night and and was really annoyed. They altered just about every important detail from the book like how they were in the glade for two years not three or how the Griever's looked it made em mad I was looking forward to the movie and I think they kind of ruined it. I did like the cast and other things but I don't think I liked it that much

message 137: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca I just saw the movie, and actually liked it better than the book!! I had some issues with the book. Plot holes and annoying characters. Most of those problems were completely eliminated in the movie!! Plus it is nearly impossible for Thomas to be as annoying when we are no longer hearing his thoughts!!

It is not a favorite story, but I was pleasantly surprised with the movie. :) I had several people tell me that the movie was terrible, so I was not expecting to like it.

message 138: by Larissa (new)

Larissa (laracvanti) | 9 comments the book wasn't as engaging as I expected (a friend kept saying how cool it was etc) and I really wanted to watch the movie because of Dylan O'Brien. it turns out the movie isn't that much better than the book. but in general, that things got shorter than in the book made it all better

I didn't care for the movie all that much. Also, I recommend reading the Kill Order, which is the prequel. It ties up so many lose ends that it's not even funny. If I had known that, I would have probably read it first.

I read Kill Order last, and would advise for everyone to do it that way. I think reading it first ruins so much of the mystery. By not knowing we get to feel for Thomas more.

Carley Conover (carley2026) | 2 comments Honestly, I LOVE LOVE LOVED the series and TMR movie was pretty good although they changed the telepathy part which would've been hard but I think someone could've done it :/ .

***SPOILER ALERT***

I also didn't like the way they changed chucks death. Although it's quicker and easier to recreate dying by the gun I think that they could've put in some more effort in the ending. I AM NOT DISSING TMR MOVIE AT ALL THE DID AN AMAZING JOB THERE WERE ONLY SOME DETAILED PARTS THAT I FEEL THEY SHOULDN'T HAVE CHANGED. But overall this movie was great!

message 150: by Roseanne (new)

Roseanne (rschmread) I watched the movie before reading the book. I love love love Newt. And the book Newt made me love the guy more!
I pointed out a lot of small differences and then some big ones to my bf as we rewatched all three movies. I hate comparing the two very different art forms. I will rest easy knowing Dashner was thrilled for its screen adaption.
