SOLVED. Fictional book of letters written between a man and woman who have never met. [s]

I read this book for the first time in the late 90s. It is a fictional book composed entirely of letters between two people living on different continents - I think Europe and Africa. The woman has a very French name (she might be writing from France). When I first read it, I got the impression that there were romantic overtones, but that may have been my overly romantic imagination (I was 14 at the time).
