Yay, and a few days early (have books to read for Battleship...)

Zonnah | 457 comments Sorry I am late with the questions. I was out of town.

Zonnah | 457 comments Renee wrote: "but what does he get out of it?"

I have been wondering the same thing about Littlefinger. With the way this book and the next are written I am wondering if we will not find out to the sixth book.

Zonnah | 457 comments Renee wrote: "Many of the characters seem to wax and wane in my opinion."

So true. I like that though. It makes them seem real to me. I know I don't always do the same kinds of things all the time and would not expect the characters to as well.

As long as Cersei dies in the next book I will be placated and can wait to find out all the intrigue.

Teresa Young | 113 comments Renee and Zonnah - my work scheduled consumed me this month and totally threw off my timeline for reading Book 4, but just wanted to let you all know I finished it and enjoyed stalking your responses to the questions.

Looking forward to Book 5 and return of some of the characters missing from Book 4.

Book Synopsis:
With A Feast for Crows, Martin delivers the long-awaited fourth volume of the landmark series that has redefined imaginative fiction and stands as a modern masterpiece in the making.

After centuries of bitter strife, the seven powers dividing the land have beaten one another into an uneasy truce. But it's not long before the survivors, outlaws, renegades, and carrion eaters of the Seven Kingdoms gather. Now, as the human crows assemble over a banquet of ashes, daring new plots and dangerous new alliances are formed while surprising faces—some familiar, others only just appearing—emerge from an ominous twilight of past struggles and chaos to take up the challenges of the terrible times ahead. Nobles and commoners, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and sages, are coming together to stake their fortunes...and their lives. For at a feast for crows, many are the guests—but only a few are the survivors.

Woohoo, starting Dec. 1! There is a chapter breakdown as well as discussion questions on pg. 1 of this thread that we can use to help facilitate discussion.

Alex | 1018 comments I couldn't resist starting a little early! I'm planning on reading this one in small chunks along with my other BRs, so it could take me a while, but I find the ASOIAF series worthy of savouring.

Interesting to see on the previous page which characters appear in this book and which don't - I'd heard that some were missing but I wasn't exactly sure who. Pleased to see more from Brienne and really looking forward to more of Jaime - his story arc in the last book was fascinating!

RachelvlehcaR (charminggirl) | 4364 comments I hope you don't mind me joining. I have been wanting to read this.

Good catch -- I saw the chapter titles and didn't even think about which characters were there. Where's my Jon Snow!? Where's Tyrion!? Those were my favs along with Arya. I could just read their stories and skip over all the others! :) I might get an early start tonight.

Happy to have you, RachelvlehcaR! I keep seeing you in almost every buddy read I'm following! :)

Jon, Tyrion and Dany are my favourites. I think the fact that they're missing from this is why a lot of people consider this to be a weak point of the series. At least we know there should be plenty of them in book 5!

I finally made some headway in this book. It was so hard to get through The Prophet (chp. 1) for some reason. But the end of that chapter was good. A kingmoot? Reminds me of an entmoot from Lord of the Rings. I'm looking forward to seeing where that goes. I was also excited by the next two chapters that brought us back to where Book 3 ended. I'm getting enveloped in Westeros again, so hopefully the rest will be smooth sailing.

Yes! They would be an excellent pair of rulers!

message 79: by Alex (new) - rated it 3 stars

Alex | 1018 comments I have to admit, I'm finding this slow going. I'd heard that this volume was more tactics and less action, but I was trying to sum up the plot so far to someone and there's not much happening! Lots of dialogue and reflection. I have a feeling it's all building up to something though.

This is going so slowly for me too. I want to finish this weekend, but I'm only 40% done. Bah! Let's hope there's some action in the wings to help speed things along.

message 82: by Alex (new) - rated it 3 stars

Alex | 1018 comments I'm probably going to take the rest of the month over it. I'm quite enjoying reading it a chunk at a time in between reading other books, reading it in bigger chunks would probably not be as enjoyable.

I finally finished this behemoth! Final thoughts: (view spoiler) I was getting frustrated that nothing really exciting was happening and none of the stories from the previous book were being resumed, but then at the end the author says that he couldn't fit everything in one book, so he put some stories in this book and the rest of the characters' stories in the next book. So darn, I should have read A Dance with Dragons first! At least that would have resumed all the cliffhangers from Book 3. Ugh!

message 84: by Alex (new) - rated it 3 stars

Alex | 1018 comments I think only the first half of A Dance With Dragons happens at the same time, so that's why they were released in that order. I'm still only about 30% in, but I'm off work for the holidays now so hoping to finish it in the next week. Resisting clicking on that spoiler!

Chapter 24(Cersei) - Chapter 25 (Brienne)

I might try and get the next section in this evening before bed, but I think I'll have had enough for one night after that.

message 88: by Alex (new) - rated it 3 stars

Alex | 1018 comments Done! Once I got into the last third of the book I found it picked up pace significantly, so it was a much easier read from that point. I've been away from my laptop so I'm just going to skip to the last two sets of discussion questions rather than doing them all retrospectively.

I'm looking forward to the next book. I was prepared for this one being less action and more plotting and planning, but I've heard it all gets exciting again about halfway through the next.
