The book revolves around a young boy, 16 in age I believe, who builds a bicycle contraption for his family to ride to a cabin in the woods that may not exist to escape the post apocalyptic world.

SPOILERS
The cabin belonged to an old man whom the boy looked after in a nursery for a school assignment. He was a bit lucid, therefore his stories seemed fake.
The cabin was used by the old man to evade taxes/the government all together
Throughout their journey they are given a goat and shotgun
At one point when they stop at a DQ they are asked to pay thousands for a bit of ice cream. The cashier girl had an interest in the main character into his little sister(brother?) points out he is ~16.
At one point they sleep in a clearing in a tent, and fearing they will be robbed, the boy sets up dried branches around their tent so if anyone stepped on them it would alert the family.

In the end they find the cabin.
