Seems most of the active members here are into foreign fiction. Any local (meaning Filipino) writers (poetry, novels, or essays) you guys read - and I mean not required reading at school, but as a personal choice?I'm re-reading Ricardo de Ungria's poetry book published by Anvil many years ago, Decimal Places.

Also reading Jack Mapanje's

I had a funny experience the other night when I sat and read my own book, Baha-bahagdang Karupukan
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/98...
pretending it was someone else's.
question... how do you add the image of a book?
Jim, I am your man when it comes to reading local (meaning Filipino) books but I am not into Tagalog poetry yet. I bought Isang Dipang Langit recently and sampled few pages and I think I am yet into that mood yet. Maybe someday. The other ones who also into reading Filipino works are Jzhun, Emir, Kwesi, Sheryl, etc but they (like me) still read far more foreign works than local ones.
I think the main reason for this is that local works remind us of school :)
@Maria, whoa! Maganda yang Blood Red Road! Mas nagustuhan Ko yan kaysa sa Divergent. Hehe. Peace. May kopya ka niyan? Kainggit naman. Haha.@All Coelho fans/readers, maganda po ba talaga yung mga gawa niya? Sinubukan Ko yung The Alchemist niya pero natengga Ako sa kalagitnaan. Parang masyado kasing preachy yung mga aklat niya. : )
Veneficus! Yes, Hardbound copy from Amazon, hehe. Hmm, i will read Blood Red Road na tlg, kasi comparable sa Divergent accdg 2u. :)I like Coelho's Brida, The Alchemist, Veronika Decides to Die. My fave is By the River Piedra I sat down and wept.
Haha. Enjoy! : )
Hi Jim, I like reading the essays and short stories of Jessica Zafra. I also read some of the works of Lourd de Veyra and Nerisa Guevara.Uploading book covers can only be done if you have a librarian status (I think). But if you are manually adding a book, there's an option to upload an image when filling out the required information for the book to be added. :)
@Veneficus: the Coelho's I liked are Eleven Minutes, Veronika Decides to Die and Like a Flowing River. The rest, okay lang.
Tricia wrote: "@Veneficus: the Coelho's I liked are Eleven Minutes, Veronika Decides to Die and Like a Flowing River. The rest, okay lang."Yes, sabi nga ng kaibigan Ko, maganda raw yung Veronika Decides to Die, totoo bang may movie adaptation nito?
Veneficus (the guy): Try reading Veronika Decides to Die or The Devil and Miss Pym. I liked them both! Oh, someday I will read all his novels. They are so cute and small and like small chickens. Twit, twit, twit...

Tricia wrote: "I heard that there will be an upcoming TV series of American Gods as well as Good Omens!"Yup! I think American Gods will be an HBO Series under Tom Hanks' Playtone. Magiging bongga ang production nila. Estimated $2 million per episode. Can't wait!! :D

Okay so I could NOT finish
and here's why http://wp.me/p1CKWU-70 .I'm moving on to

Joy wrote: "hi! newbie here :) i'm re-reading this American Gods"you're re-reading this?!! i barely finished American Gods, it bored me to death.
@K.D., the guy talaga. Haha.

I think it is an unfair statement to say that books by Filipino authors remind you of school. Most members here like foreign authors because that is what they grew up reading - from early on, at home and at school. It is a matter of exposure.
English remains "the better language to learn" it seems among most Filipinos. Remnants of colonialism. There is so much crap written in English that gets shoved down our throats - they just have bigger machinery to do that with: big publishers, distributors, monopolistic bookshop chains, even the education system itself.
Until there's a greater effort to support and give equal opportunity to local authors - whether they write in Filipino, in English, or in any of the other dialects/languages of the Philippines - the playing field will never be fair.
When I was teaching Filipino at the Ateneo I required my students to buy a book by a Filipino author in order to expose them. I asked them to review the book and some made presentations in class. I believe that somehow opened their eyes.
@alibiserver -- you were lucky. I've never met him in person, just online. He seems to be a great guy.

Good for you. I feel so out of touch with what's being published in the Philippines now. Would you be able to give me a list of who to watch out for?
Oh Jim, I understand what you are saying. That's one reason why we have a Pinoy Book here in Goodreads-Filipinos group. Despite our proddings and glowing reviews, they are still not picking the books up :) I got that feedback and I could sense that it is shared by many.
@Jim, there's a lot to watch out for, not only workshopped writers but writers who are in the fringes of the canon. A trip to the bookstore and to bookshops like bookay-ukay will yield to an exciting find.

super! And I think, there will be a second book for this if Neil Gaiman is serious for tweeting that he needs to write the second installment to support the series. If I'm not mistaken, 10 seasons?! Or just episodes? Anyway, I'm more excited for Good Omens (I love Aziraphale and Crowley!)
@maria @joyzi true! It's boring and been dragging myself to finish it but there are some parts I really enjoyed (the mythology is a plus, too).
@Veneficus: I may lend you my Veronika Decides to Die if my friend return it before the meet-up. It's hard to ask people to return books after graduating!!! I sold my other Coelho so that's the only book I have on my shelf now.
Thanks KD and Alibiserver -- I am really quite new to the group so have little idea of what has happened.I would like to call out to anyone here who might share my views. What's the best way to do this? Any reviewers of local books in your membership at all?

AHHHH! Thank you! An old trick learns a new dog. hahahahaha.
Got too excited and abandoned the other books I'm reading just to give time for reading Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita. Man, I never read anything like this and I find Humbert really funny!
