Ngayung

Free verse, freed. Short poems, usually one per page. Even the lines are short. Easy to traverse since the writing is simple, even the words used are simple, but not simplified. Agustin's poems attain complexity, depth from the infinite sincerity of his simplicity. Varied subjects: love, travels, poverty, homesickness, breathtaking vistas, breathtaking encounters, news seen on TV and papers, etc.

Here's a sample poem, translated from Filipino:

The Words Are Still the Same

Most of these poems in Filipino were written before I left for South Africa. One day I hope some if not all of them will appear in translation.

Jim Pascual Agustin was born in the Philippines.
His latest book is HOW TO MAKE A SALAGUBANG HELICOPTER & other poems (San Anselmo Press).
His early years were spent in a communal house where he struggled to remember all the names of his numerous cousins. His family was forced out of their land to make way for the construction of a highway named after the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos. A brief
