I recently got this for my kindle, not realizing it was part of a series. Would I be able to read this properly without reading the first three books?

Yes, it reads fine as a stand alone.

You can absolutely read this! I read this since i am a horse lover and rider myself and i loved everything!

You will be fine if you read it alone. But if you read the other books you realize that some characters repeatedly show up!
