There's just something about sitting in front of the fireplace in my old leather chair, letting my eyes glance over the bookshelves briefly reliving all the adventures each book represents.
I do that in my sunroom!Except without the fireplace. Your room sounds awesome! My favorite stress reliever is relaxing in my chair, sipping a coffee (or wine) and perusing the books.
Kindred book spirit!
Laurel I've read the night angel trilogy by Brent Weeks and i loved it. I'm waiting for the third instalment of the lightbringer trilogy before i start that. I like reading a series all in one go
No laurel i love my ereader but i do get why people love an actual book. Most of my friends prefer books but i will convert them to ereaders lol

E-readers are great for many people, and I love that they make reading more accessible for more people.
However, I get too much joy from buying books and then trying to find a place to squeeze them into my bookshelf for me to ever switch.
The one exception is if it's a book that I'm really taking a chance on (self-published, or not widely liked) then I'll download it to my computer since it's cheaper, but I almost never finish reading those in a timely manner.

What makes you think that I've stopped doing THAT? I have stacks of books awaiting placement on my shelves. Of course, I'm also awaiting my downstairs library shelves to be built, so that's part of the problem.
The only difference now is how I buy books. I can be more selective and buy books that I know I enjoy and want on my shelves.
When I take a chance on a physical copy that I've never read, it's usually used and less than $1 at the thrift-store. I don't waste money on full-price physical copies anymore unless I know I already enjoy the book.
Good point, Becky. My shelves are also full-to-bursting. I need to build myself new ones, but considering all the DIY I haven't done due to reading, I don't see that happening anytime soon lol.
Yeah. My nook simple touch does have a backlight but you can control the strength of the light better than on a tablet device. And I read without it when I can. I love my nook HD but the reflective surface does bother my eyes when I use it to read for a long period of time. And I can't read it in sunlight or under a bright light. I do wear glasses though, so someone who does not read with glasses may not have the same problem that I have had.
Luke, you made me snort and laugh out loud! All three of the dogs stopped and braced as if we were under attack. It was wonderful! Thanks for my best laugh all week :)You and Becks are my book kindred spirits.
And Gerard, I agree that it's always more enjoyable to be able to power through a completed series. I'll have to give Night Angel a try.
Money is actually one of my deciding factors between books vs. ebooks. I have discovered that I *do* spend more on ebooks. I make too many impulse buys. I have a bad weakness for cheap ebooks. Also - I have a few used bookstores in my area that I can sell books to. So even though physical books cost more, I can sell the ones I don't want. I can't do that with ebooks.
Both have their advantages and disadvantages.
I use both. I stuff my shelves full of books and then I hide them when hubby is getting fed up.Of course, it's time for a new bookshelf. :-D
I will read something on my dedicated ereader but my primary desire is to read a hardcopy. I've noticed that I was really heavy ereader for a couple of years but I've switched back to hardcopy.
If a book is on my reader I have a easier time putting it down and forgetting about it. THe same with starting an ebook - it's more likely to sit and smolder.
I also tend to buy favorites in multiple formats: hardcopy and ebook. Except for books that both hubby and I read - then we have paper, audio and (sometimes) ebook.
I can't imagine reading Malazan in ebook: I have to flip back and forth and then I have to spend a lot of time reading the glossary and/or cast of characters. I go back and forth to those things A LOT. A lot. But if the read goes well I'll be able to read it on ebook later.
tl;dr: BUY ALL THE BOOKS! READ ALL THE TIME!
Laurel wrote: "Gerard, are you arguing both sides?!I do have an entry level fantasy question as well. I've never sat down to read any Brent weeks. I've read just about everyone else. Am I missing out?"
What?? Going off topic? What's the matter with you...
Oh wait. That IS the topic..err..
I really liked Weeks's Night Angel trilogy. That's all I read. Oh, there's a prequel novella to it called "Perfect Shadow". Do NOT read that before the trilogy.
I have been guilty of directing many thread off-topic, fortunately this time it was already off-topic by the time I arrived lol."tl;dr: BUY ALL THE BOOKS! READ ALL THE TIME! "
My thoughts exactly, but alas, I have to work to get money to buy books, but I can't read books because I work all the time. It's a horrible dilemma that I've found no solution for.
@Laurel, glad to have made you laugh :D Kindred spirits we shall be!

That "buy" button is far too convenient, isn't it?? I recently had to put myself on an ebook buying ban.
I wish I had used bookstores in the area. I donate mine to the library instead. I still buy physical books from time to time, but I've officially run out of space. I also have a library borrowing problem...
*sighs* The problems of being a bookworm.

Cant wait for the Broken Eye in August!

See, I have a problem not buying books. Clothes? No problem not buying. Shoes? Also no problem not buying. But books? I decimate my clothing, shoes, etc budget to buy more books. Hubby had to force me to buy shoes this year. It was time. :( That was rather wasteful cause I could have bought more books BUT I was getting close to being barefoot...
I buy them from EVERYWHERE. Libraries, used book stores, new book stores, Amazon, Goodwil. If I see a good book in the street, I will pick it up (that's how I got hubby reading Lee Child - free street book!). Free books? Done! Library books? Done!

Im looking forward to reading the lightbringer series but i forgot it was expanded to a four book series. As i said before i like to read a series in one go
I'm the same way. My wife has threatened cancelling the debit card that I have on Amazon since it's so easy for me to rack up $100 in book purchases a month. My idea of a romantic date is going to a bookstore lol.

My book budget for March is already shot. I'm buying Words of Radiance in store, which is like $30, then I'm going to a Sanderson book signing where you have to purchase a book there. So already that's like $50 in March.

You'd think I wouldn't be spending as much as I did (well actually I'm not I suppose) as I have a LOT of books I haven't gotten to yet. The problem is they keep publishing new ones....I think I'm a better customer of Audible now that any other specific book outlet.
Hang in there. Have you tried ABE Books? Lots of used book outlets searched for your title.

My book budget got blown to bits as well. Yes, I'm looking at you Words of Radiance.... Didn't help that Weller wanted $60 shipping fees on top of the book's $30 price for a signed copy to South Africa.... Oh well, you cannot put a price on happiness :)

One of the first things he says is "Hi, do you have any questions for me?". He's the only author we've met that actually encouraged dialogue. He didn't even care about the line. When they got kicked out of the venue he offered to meet fans outside.
Yeah, he does so many cool little things like that. He had a copy of Words of Radiance in his hand during one of his creative writing classes, and he gave it to the first person that gasped really loudly when they noticed what it was lol.Plus, he'll write spoilers in your book. I'm so excited :3
Ive been justifying it as a once off for a signed copy....Next release I will be using book depository (free shipping) for my unsigned copy. Until Brandon visits me of course. Lol
Eon wrote: "Luke - please ask Brandon to visit South Africa for me. ;)"Or...you could write him an email that Luke could give him... :)
I've never met him (boo hoo!) but a Goodreads friend went to a signing and told him about the health troubles I've been having. He signed two extra things for her to send to me which is totally awesome! Love Sanderson! My guy also encourages me to buy books. I never go shopping for clothes or shoes. I won't mention what I spend...
Eon wrote: "You just made my day!"I sent you my email address. I'll print it off and stick it in my books to be signed so I don't accidentally forget it lol.

M my first Kindle was the K3 - aka Kindle Keyboard. I thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread, and the plugins I was able to use via Calibre made it even better! I didn't want a tablet because I don't like reading on my computer screen and I figured a tablet would be more of the same.
Then, after much bellyaching (and guilt, because my K3 still works well) I got the Paperwhite. It was love at first read!!
I gave the K3 to my mom, and she enjoys having it.
Santa just bought me an iPad this past Christmas, but I only use it, reading wise, for magazines or if my Paperwhite is charging. I'll also use it for graphic novels and manga, if I decide to buy any in electronic format.
