The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, together with its sequels, is one of my favourite books. For first-timers here it’s worth noting it was first a BBC radio comedy that became a novel only afterwards. The rest was history; thanks to the multi-talented author, there came book sequels, a BBC TV 1981 series, new radio adaptations, a computer game, a towel franchise, stage shows, and a 2005 film.

It would be worth effort to read the sequels also – I do not doubt many readers of the first book will afterwards gladly delve into them too – but here we’ll tackle only the first book in the series.

As part of our club’s refurbishments, we decided to do our club’s reads differently from now on. This book will be our first effort to split the discussions into smaller chunks, that should be spoiler-free from the parts that follow them:

The Hitchhiker 01 – Chapters 1-7 (Week One)
The Hitchhiker 02 – Chapters 8-20 (Week Two)
The Hitchhiker 03 – Chapters 21-35 and Final Impressions (Week Three)
The Hitchhiker 04 – Adaptations and Comparisons (Week Four)

So, are you ready to read the book? What do you know of it, what are your expectations? Have you read it already – did you like it, are you going to read it again? Maybe you have seen (or heard) any of the adaptations first?
