I did finish my January stuff. However, here's my plate.
4 pending First Reads.
6 pending NetGalley ARCs.
Re-read/continuation Buddy read of the Malazan Brick of the Fallen
Buddy read of The Way of Bricks.
3 other pending group reads from various groupstuff.
Signed on for a HFU Bachelor's Degree in Language, Arts, and Athletics (baseball, baby).
Fantasy Baseball season three keeper leagues and a brand new Dynasty league.
New grandbaby that keeps me up all night on weekends so I fall asleep when I try to read.
lol
better?
I've read plenty of books so far this year but have gotten behind on the 2014 series challenge. My goal list keeps getting shorter and shorter. For now I'm just going to concentrate on the big ones.

Sweet. Looks like a good refresher! Thank you.
When did I last check in? I have no idea. I'm finishing up Prince Caspian on audio. I'm also reading Shift Omnibus Edition (Silo, #2). In addition, I'm slowly making my way through Twenty Years at Hull House. As a graduate student studying macro social work, it's great to pick up and read a chapter or two to keep me motivated throughout the semester :)
So here was my original plan:Nyssa wrote: "Here is my TBR for the month, in no particular order:
Main Choices:
A Study in Scarlet
The Unusual Suspects
Gardens of the Moon
Howl's Moving Castle
The Silver Chair
The Horse and His Boy
Wuthering Heights
Would Like to also Read:
Ancillary Justice
The Cheerleaders of Doom
Because of Winn-Dixie
If I manage to read them all, I will match or improve upon my success in January with the number of books read.
Thankfully, I was able to fit four of these into the Feb 2014: Luuuuuurve N Stuff Challenge as well."
And here is my current reality:
Main Choices:
✓ A Study in Scarlet ~ Completed 2/2/14
The Unusual Suspects ~ Haven't Touched
Gardens of the Moon ~ Placed on Hold
Howl's Moving Castle ~ Currently Reading (Just started tonight)
✓ The Silver Chair ~ Completed 2/18/14
The Horse and His Boy ~ Haven't Touched
Would Like to also Read:
The Cheerleaders of Doom ~ Haven't Touched
Because of Winn-Dixie ~ Haven't Touched
Currently Reading Instead:
Earth Abides
The Sign of Four
The Spirit Thief - Meh. very meh.Fool Me Twice - format issues. :(
Write review for Castle of Wizardry - lazy, I guess
Steelheart - stopped 1/2 in. Meh.
You Are Your Own Gym: The Bible Of Bodyweight Exercises For Men And Women - not even cracked
The CarbLovers Diet: Eat What You Love, Get Slim For Life - Not sure what I'll do with this one
The Geek's Guide to Dating - not what i expected. Going back to library
Becoming a Supple Leopard: The Ultimate Guide to Resolving Pain, Preventing Injury, and Optimizing Athletic Performance - not even cracked
Gardens of the Moon - done! :-D
Howl's - done!
The Silver Chair - untouched
The Horse and His Boy - untouched
Sherlock - untouched
I somehow got into a manga phase and an reading a whole heck of a lot of Fruits Basket. I need to make a separate "Read in 2014" shelf for manga/graphic novels so it doesn't look insane.
I just finished The Emperor's Blades. I'm approximately in the middle of Three Princes and Catastrophe 1914: Europe Goes to War, but will probably start reading Hild or Wolfhound Century also.

Well, I'm about 1/3 of the way into Three Princes and it's moderately intriguing. Don't know if that helps mitigate what you're feeling from reading the reviews, though.
Oh! I wouldn't say it's unreadable -- perhaps the prose style is a little more formal than the reviewer(s) expected -- I sense a (slight) homage to writers such as Jules Verne.

Such a sweet and cute story. I recommend it to people who don't even like manga (or don't think they do).
My other favorite was Inuyasha. If you like Fruits Basket you might like it too. A modern Japanese girl gets sent back to feudal Japan where she meets a dog boy demon.
<--- Doesn't like manga Though technically I'd fall in the "doesn't think I'd like manga" category, since I've never read any. I just don't like the style of artwork and in comics/graphic novels that's a deal-breaker for me. Even looking at the covers puts me off of even trying them. All of them. LOL I don't like anime either.
A good friend recommended Steamboy to me because he LOOOOOOOOOOVED it. One of his favorite movies. I could barely make it through the trailer without squirming and wanting to not watch it. I can appreciate that the animation & artwork is technically very well done, but I just don't like the style. :(
I was like that too but for some reason am into it recently. I've been having a much graphic novel-heavier year anyway, so maybe it was a natural progression?
I liked Inuyasha. The TV show at least.Hubby loves anime so I get exposed to a lot of it. To my dismay. :\

^This.....
...and really, with my damn TBR, I really don't need to expand to new reading territory. Hehe
I could never get into manga, but the senior pastor's daughter loves it. My late wife used to watch a lot of anime (she was bed fast for almost two years so watched a lot of TV). Guess I'm just not geared for it, LOL. I get the Pastor Linda's daughter an "I Love Mange" mug for Christmas.
I've just discovered Subterranean Press.O_O
They have the house of chains up next. The cheapest one is $150.
*sigh*
I wish I could buy stuff like that...

I like the fantasy manga series Bizenghast (mostly), but that's basically the only manga I read that isn't a tie-in to regular novels. Just not my style, really :)
Emily wrote: "It seems to be excellent for breaking my reading slumps, at least this year. So I'll take it! ;)"Yeah, the few I've read have been great for that for me too :)
Subterranean Press often sells $20ish versions of their expensive releases?! I've bought a number of novellas from them!

hmmmmm....

That's where some of those awsome (non-mullet) covers for GotM were from...
The only thing that I bought through Sub Press is Gunpowder by Joe Hill. It's 88 pages long, and was more than $30. They have a lot of books that I want - but none that I can afford. I bought that one because it was so limited and I couldn't find it anywhere else for less.
Amazon has it now for $70. O_o
I still don't have Gunpowder...probably never will unless/until they release it in a mortal-reader's format.

They are beautiful. Simply breathtaking.
Just posted a review on Black Gate of the new anthology from John Joseph Adams and Hugh Howey, The End is Nigh. The short version: a volume of excellent, powerful short stories, so effective on a theme so depressing that I couldn't make myself finish it in one week. Buy it, but make yourself space it out to one short story a week. The review: http://tinyurl.com/ockzmpj
Finally got my ducks in a row for the next few books in Malazan. But I'm torn. If I start DHG now, there's no way I'm picking something else up. Like any of next month reads and I plan on reading all but the horror.
So I thought of starting on the March reads early so I can clear up my schedule.
Then I realized I have several books I'm currently reading plus some library books out still. I'm really backed up and I haven't even started Sherlock.
O_O
Does anyone else have a problem of falling into an "author glut," reading multiple books by the same author in succession (not necessarily in the same series)? These are the books that I have read this month:
The Shadow Lamp (book 4 of 5 of The Bright Empires series) by Stephen Lawhead
The Siege of Dome by Stephen Lawhead
The Complete Anne of Green Gables Boxed Set ( it is a dollar on Amazon)... I read through Anne of the Island..
The Earthsea Trilogy by Ursula LeGuin (a re-read)
Gifts by LeGuin (and the two books that complete the trilogy)
Red Rising by Pierce Brown (I can't recommend this book enough!)
To be read:
The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon
TWoK and a Darkling Sea(through rec from this forum)
Want to read ( but will probably run out of time):
Something by Greg Bear that I haven't read yet.
One of the many books on my shelf purchased who knows how long ago but remains untouched.
I re-read ASoFaI over Christmas break, and all I to say about that is, "Finish the darn books George..."

I finally finished Earth Abides this morning, and I will be continuing Howl's Moving Castle this evening. If I'm lucky, I will finish that sooner than later, and then read The Sign of Four. If I'm super lucky I'll go on to The Unusual Suspects - but I think that might be pushing it a bit.
