What are you reading in Feb 2014?

I got interested in the book after watching the movie trailer, but I didn't think the book's description matched the trailer. Didn't realize they were even related.

It looks like it might be one of this rare cases where I like the movie better than the book.
I don't know. I'm *not* liking Silver Lining Playbook either. Maybe it's me. :(

What's it about? I was wondering about it because of the movie.

Or just the trailer is a lie.
That happened to me with 'Atonement'. I didn't know anything about the book, but from the trailer was expecting this sort of romance story - and as I like both Knightley and McAvoy as actors, decided to give it a go.
The story was so different from what I expected from the trailer, I also felt distinctly lied to.

With a paper book, when I feel close to the end, I tend to rifle ahead to see exactly where the story actually stops.
And so last night I put my book down thinking I had 30+ pages to go when, in actuality, I only had, like, 5 and found myself abruptly at the end of the book.
If I had known that I would've finished last night and grabbed one of my library books for today! Bastards.
The good thing about e-readers is you can carry more than one story, so while I was a bit put out by the end of my story when I thought I had several more pages... I was at least able to start something new to tide me over for the rest of the train ride.
And so it was that this morning I finished My Boyfriend Merlin and started The Silver Chair.

I hate that, too.
I've been reading a lot more paper books lately - I prefer paper from the library, too.
I've a ton at home (library books) and I need to drop off Howl's and pick up Lord of the Silver Bow tonight.

Absolutely!!! :)
If it weren't for all my back issues and the fact that I had to purposely pick books to read that I could physically handle, I don't know if I would've ever gotten one. Large bricks that I love, I wasn't even able to hold up to read. My kindle helps, but will never replace! :)

If you've seen the trailer, what they show is actually a very small part of the book. I really can't say much without spoilers, but the book is about loosely connected stories and characters.

I barely understood the trailer. Spoil me away.

Here's a not so flattering description of Winter's Tale that I found online. Warning. Big Spoilers.

Ok.
So, this book (and probably this movie) is NOTHING that I expected it to be.
And it sounds sooooooo confusing. O_O

I'm the same. I have the Kindle app on my computer, and my wife has a Kindle, but there's absolutely nothing like going into a bookstore and picking out REAL books. There's something about the feel of real paper between your fingers.
I purchase all the "primary" books in a genre since if they've had that much of an impact on the genre, then I should own a copy. It's expensive, but I love staring at a nice, full bookshelf.
I buy e-book versions of indie authors so I'm not out much money if I don't care for them.
I just can't get into audio-books. They're soooooo much slower than my reading speed. I can finish a 3-4 books in the time it takes to listen to a audio-book.

I've always loved being surrounded by books...moving them on the other hand is another story.

Heh.
(I also kinda like what he says about rules of magic.)
And, apparently, there's a graphic version of Graveyard Book coming out. I'll probably pick it up but, judging by the pics on the blog, I kinda wish Chris Riddell had done it.

Anyway - can't decide whether I want to start School of Fear or Eddie: The Lost Youth of Edgar Allan Poe.

Yeah, I think part of it has to do with my job and hobbies. I don't really have many moments where I could listen to something while I do other things. My commutes are very short, and I can only listen to music while working.
Audio-books just annoy me. My wife likes them, but I'm used to getting through things much more quickly, and taking 10 hours to get through 100 pages worth of material (I don't actually know what the length difference is) is incredibly boring for me.
I also don't do well with reading books on my computer. There are just so many things to do online that I often get sidetracked and take forever to read anything that I download. Take "American Gods", I read something interesting, then spent the next two hours researching early American exploration by Roman/pre-Roman peoples.

Sadly, I do this even with hard copy. I was trying to read Gardens of the Moon and I got stuck at "Enfilade."

Yes.

We are carrying too many conversations in too many places! I'm getting confuzzled. :)
I don't watch the show but I know when the (view spoiler)
Ahhh, I thought. It has begun.

Though now they might not need to"
that's my bad. Luke and I were talking in a different thread and I got my tabs confused.

It is fairly well known both in internet culture and any decent fantasy circle. It's not a spoiler just to speak the name. It's something bad, but then again, that goes for just about any page or event that Martin writes, so it shouldn't be surprising.

So anyway..thanks for fixing that.

What little I know are tidbits mentioned by my husband who has read the books and used to watch the show. I know nothing about the RW other than there was an event with that name.

I did end up liking the book though, I might actually have to watch the movie.
I finished The Gunslinger too. Short books and long day - no work. It was a reread but I didn't remember getting so much of Roland's past. The flashbacks are my favorite parts of the series. The book was way more enjoyable on a seconds read.
I'm starting The Way of Kings today in anticipation of the 2nd book coming out next month. I need to refresh my memory and I guess I could Google it - but where's the fun in that? Gah - this book is long though! I'm glad I have it on my nook too.
Also, going to start The Age of Miracles. I know nothing about this book except there was a sale and it looked interesting.

I'm the SAME WAY. I read Reading Lolita in Tehran last year, which I thought was about female education in the Middle East political/religious situation (it was, partially) but it also included a TON of analysis and spoilers for classic books. *sigh*
Just because it's been out and part of the popular culture doesn't mean that everyone knows it. A book, or TV show, or movie, or piece of art, or a play, or whatever is always going to be new to someone.

Now, I'm listening to Fangirl. I alternate between wanting to shake the protagonist and wanting to hug her.
I'm also reading Moloka'i for my Historical Fictionistas group. Very heartbreaking, but really good so far.
