Being from a published book is not a requirement for quotes on Goodreads, although we like to link them to a book when that's where they are from.

Was it wrong for me to delete the quote, in that case? I assumed that if the author says it wasn't published in any form, it has no business getting quoted. Please let me know how I should handle requests like that in future?

If an author asks for a quote of theirs to be deleted, and it has zero likes from users, it's fine to delete it -- for any reason.

If it has likes, we generally don't delete quotes without very good cause, but we edit typos and such.
