After being forced into early retirement from the CIA, Alex Cave finds his new job as a geophysics instructor to be similar to a caged animal performing the same tricks repeatedly, until he receives an urgent message from the Director of Volcanology in Iceland, asking for his assistance to determine the cause of an unusual geological event. What he discovers is a piece of advanced alien technology, and he realizes it has the capability to be more destructive than nuclear weapons.
Greed is the driving force for Janice Sloan, and when she learns about the device, she vows that nothing is going to stop her from stealing it and selling it to the highest bidder. She manages to get her hands on it before Alex, and when she turns it on at an abandoned test facility in the Nevada desert, birds begin slamming into the ground around her, but she cannot turn it off.
Satellites begin falling from the sky, and the device threatens to pull down the International Space Station. When it begins altering the orbit of the moon, the Director of National Security asks Alex to find the device and shut it down before the tidal effect rips the planet apart.
Can Alex and his friends find a way to shut it down before it’s too late? Or will the device cause the annihilation of all life on the planet.
