SOLVED. Y/A Sci-Fi Humans trying to survive alien invasion? [s]

I read this book in either the very late 70's or early 80's. What I remember is that humans were scattered into small groups that traveled a wasted landscape in special suits that let them jump distances. They scavenged parts and tech from destroyed buildings and machines to keep their suits running. They were trying to escape, or avoid some type of alien(s) that were eventually discovered to be using human parts to power machinery. One part I distinctly remember is that one of the group members had a bit of a potbelly that he was incredibly proud of, but that other members made good-natured fun of, and near the end of the book when they came across a machine that appeared to be powered by limbs.
