Dawn (caveatlector) The Medieval Group read for August 2015 is A Plague on Both Your Houses by Susanna Gregory

Gretchen (eab2012) I finished this book for another group last month. I'm excited to see what other think about it. I thought it was middle of the road. Good enough to want to continue with the series.

Guy VanHorn (gvhatl) | 36 comments I read this book last year and also thought it was middle of the road -- the writing and the story certainly did not blow me away. However, I'll see if reading another book by Gregory makes a difference. So in August, I'll be reading the second book in the series titled An Unholy Alliance.

Mark | 1885 comments I found it a great start to the series. The books become better as we get to know all the characters.

Shannon | 37 comments I love books set in this time and especially centered around the plague, but I'm not sure if this book sounds good or not. I can't wait to hear what everyone thinks!

Gretchen (eab2012) It does deal pretty heavily with the plague so I think if the plague is something you are interested in, it would definitely be worth checking out. I felt the actual mystery took a back seat to the plague.

Clare O'Beara | 139 comments I agree - I actually got the feeling that the author wanted to write a mystery set during the plague times in Cambridge, and then found she had such a good start that she could keep expanding on it in later books.
It's on my to re-read list which is not a long list!

Samantha (samanthajw) | 66 comments I recently read this one as well. I enjoyed the setting and will probably continue the series, but did anyone else find the plot a little convoluted?

Patricia | 103 comments I am new to this group & just started this book. I'm a bit confused with how you do your monthly discussions. The home page still shows the July books. Do you wait until the end of the month to discuss the books?

Dawn (caveatlector) Sorry about that, sometimes the program doesn't roll them over like it's supposed to and I seldom look at the home page. It's showing the correct books now.

We start discussing the books on the first of the month, the threads stay open indefinitely. The discussions have been a little slow these past few months though, as none of the moderators have had time to read the books chosen. :)

Pamela (bibliohound) I am about half way through and enjoying both the mystery and the descriptions of the plague.

Patricia | 103 comments Glad your threads stay open longer than the month. I'm still reading this, but have been trying to finish a couple of other books. I'm enjoying it so far, but the chapters are long!

Unholy Alliance read very similar to A Plague on Both Your Houses. A somewhat convoluted story and flow, but I did enjoy further development of some of the central characters. Not likely to stick with the series or this author. However, a good read even though I did not find it a riveting mystery.

Pamela (bibliohound) Just finished this, found it enjoyable and a good start to the series. I probably will read more in the series at some time. I agree the plot was rather convoluted and the way it all got explained was a bit clunky, and I also felt the plague aspects could have been more tightly tied in with the mystery, especially in the middle part of the novel. Liked the characters and the setting very much though, they are what would make me read more.

Meri (aussie_bookworm) | 66 comments I'm reading this now and I'm almost half way through and I'm finding the story interesting and the descriptions of life in the town and at the college are great. I'm finding the book hard to put down. Great choice for a monthly read as I've had this on my To be read pile for months and it's finally getting read.

Patricia | 103 comments I finally finished this. I did like the characters, and I think that's what kept me reading. I'm with those who found it "middle of the road" and the mystery rather convoluted. Not sure if I'll read any more, but since others say they get better, I might try the next one at some point.
