Why I Read by Wendy Lesser

Lesser's take on character environments and autonomy was dead on in this excerpt. Her ability to offer strong literary criticism doesn't seem to be the problem. The issue I had is that I couldn't tell if this evolved out of a student book report, a TED talk draft, or what. The "he said, but then she said, but now I say" style got tiring very quickly for me. Still, I enjoyed the heart of her content, the breadth of works she cited, and her clarity regarding her basic points. Stylistic aggravation aside, I will probably consider getting this book. I'm intrigued just enough to feel some investment.

Thanks for the insight Ashley! I'll be curious to hear what you think about the rest!
