In Why I Read: The Serious Pleasure of Books , the reader will discover a definition of literature that is as broad as it is broad-minded. In addition to novels and stories, Wendy Lesser explores plays, poems, and essays along with mysteries, science fiction, and memoirs. As she examines these works from such perspectives as “Character and Plot,” “Novelty,” “Grandeur and Intimacy,” and “Authority,” Why I Read sparks an overwhelming desire to put aside quotidian tasks in favor of reading. Lesser’s passion for this pursuit resonates on every page, whether she is discussing the book as a physical object or a particular work’s influence.

Ashley (jashleyodell) | 3 comments Lesser's take on character environments and autonomy was dead on in this excerpt. Her ability to offer strong literary criticism doesn't seem to be the problem. The issue I had is that I couldn't tell if this evolved out of a student book report, a TED talk draft, or what. The "he said, but then she said, but now I say" style got tiring very quickly for me. Still, I enjoyed the heart of her content, the breadth of works she cited, and her clarity regarding her basic points. Stylistic aggravation aside, I will probably consider getting this book. I'm intrigued just enough to feel some investment.

Thanks for the insight Ashley! I'll be curious to hear what you think about the rest!
