I actually liked the idea of S.P.E.W (even though it sounds like the sound someone would make when vomiting). I thought Hermione showed a really strong side of her character when standing up for something she believed in-especially for something that has been going on for centuries.
It was a realistic way of 1) showing that Hermione can stand up for what she believes in even if no one else agrees (a true Gryffindor quality, now that I think about it) and 2) pointing out that the wizards oppress non-human creatures.
I always think of that movie Wayne's World: "If you're gonna spew, spew into this (holds out Dixie cup to friend about to vomit)".
All the best laid plans. . . :)

Well JK Rowling does have a bit of fun with her names like that. NEWTs, OWLs, etc. I mean, she's got a character named Lavender Brown and a location called Diagon Alley. She's a bit silly with it all around.
I always loved Hermione and I completely agree! It made her seem so much stronger. Usually she was very bookish and loveable but as soon as she became an activist my appreciation for her character just skyrocketed! Not only was she intelligent but she was also a leader- which really helped to distinguish why she was in Gryffindor rather than Ravenclaw :)
I love house elfs!!!! Especially Dobby, he's sooooo cute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I support SPEW!!!!!!

I thought it was a great way of introducing the inequities in the wizarding world and how people who grew up with it just didn't think about it because it's all they knew. It set us up for a lot of important ideas later.
I think it was a bit contrived but it paid off in the last book when Ron goes to check and make sure the house elves are out of the line of fire and Hermione kisses him. Add to that the way the Hogwarts elves come out to defend their home.
I totally support S.P.E.W
I even made a badge and I put it on my school bag
Proud S.P.E.W member :)

Susie- thats what I was thinking about! Cutest kiss scene ever!
Harry in the background was great too.
As for S.P.E.W. I agree with everyone but Hermione, they don't want to be free. I think they should have some rights, but not be completely free.
