Also, often we use M/M for Male/Male instead of MM == Mass-Market :D

Ooooh. THAT's an angle bracket (<). I've never called it anything other than a greater than/less than sign. Thanks :)

Here are a couple similar books I've read. Maybe they will help shake something loose.

The main character has the power to manipulate magnetic fields (or something similar), the second main character has the power of speed. They are soldiers in the fight against aliens, the second one returns after having been stuck on the alien planet for years. They have issues with their powers in that they "overheat" or something. They end up bonding in some way but hiding it from the military.
I believe the main character was a Sargent before the second guy disappears through the wormhole. but when he comes back, the main character is a Captain or something. I believe the second guy is a Lieutenant.
In the middle of the book there is a scene where they are eating in an marketplace outside of a cafe and they get attacked. The attackers are in a big military truck that the main character stops dead with his powers and the speed guy breaks the engine with their combined(?) powers. They did it to protect their friends, the cafe owner and the other marketplace vendors, and the vendors property.
Near the end, they go and practice in a training yard. The place is open to the sky but has high walls and is very private although it's in the middle of the city (I think). They practice by seeing what they can do against automated turrets/bots and various booby traps. Because of their bonding they are better together then anyone ever has been apart.
The main character has a relative, nephew maybe(?), who "turns on" (they call it something specific but i can't remember what it is). The military has been watching him for awhile, hoping he will be as strong as his uncle. The main character trains him and becomes his legal guardian so that the military doesn't force him into service. They do end up registering him (it would be illegal otherwise) and I believe the young man does join up.
There is some drama with the leader of some military faction being the one to try and kill them. I'm not sure if he gets killed by them, killed on purpose, on accident, or just taken and tried, but they get rid of him somehow before the end.
I am so sure I actually have this book in my digital library right now, I just can't find it.
