Which is better, the Divergent series or the Hunger Games series?

I've read reviews of both the Divergent series and the Hunger Game series. I am very intrigued by the range of opinions out there. I have a very definite answer to the question I'm posing, and can tell you exactly why I think that way, but I want to see what everyone else thinks. Discuss.

I love the Hunger Games more. Divergent was amazing but for me the rest of the series went down and crashed and burned.

Lucy Yin I think that the hunger games book 1 and 2 were pretty good, but Mockingjay really sucked.

One does not simply ask which trilogy is better.

But if I HAD to pick, I would choose...

NOPE CAN'T DO IT
(one sec i have to contemplate the biggest decision of my life...)

Okay I'm back. I decided the only possible way to do this is a point system. I will be giving each topic a maximum of five points

Heroine:
Katniss 4
Tris 3.5
(They both did some pretty stupid things, but Katniss just kicks more butt in the Games and the revolution)

Love Interest
Peeta: 5
Gale: 2
Four/Tobias: 4 :)
(Don't come at me Gale fans, but Peeta is really sweet. Also, he is the perfect counter to Kat's fire, which she herself commented on in the last book. Four comes off harsh, but is caring. I think for me it's just preference.)

World
THG: 4
Divergent: 3

(Okay, as far as it being realistic, both are a bit iffy. But since Chicago is kind of parallel to Panem, I have to give THG this one)

Storyline
THG: 4
Divergent: 3

(Again, Divergent hit the ground running with the first book, but if I'm being honest, the plot started to fall apart a little bit when it came to Insurgent and Allegiant. Insurgent for me was pretty bland. THG though carried that momentum through to Catching Fire, Which IMP was the best book. The only thing that kept me from giving THG five stars was that in my opinion, Mockingjay was just a big ball of depression! I found it hard to read because half of the book was just Katniss MOPING. I mean, she has a good reason, but it just made it a bit too unenjoyable.)

Ending
THG: 3
Divergent: 4.5

(The endings were TOTALLY different. Like, whoa. I'm glad that THG got that ending. Peeta and Katniss deserved happiness after all they had been through.
BUT
In terms of risk-taking, outside-the-box endings, Divergent takes the cake. In all fairness, Divergent's ending is the most realistic. People die in war, even heroes. Most people hated the ending, but I think it was new and fresh. Something that doesn't happen a lot in YA, and I applaud Roth for taking that risk. But I just knocked a half a star off because I didn't want her to die. :( )

I'm giving each team a bonus point
Finnick exists points: 1 for each side

Final score: (canceling out Gale points)
THG: 21
Divergent: 19

With a close two point difference, I like The Hunger Games better, for just a slight preference of the world and plot.

Don't hate me :)

Honestly, I think the Divergent series was better than the Hunger Games series.
I agree with Tina that there is no love triangle in Divergent (which I didn't like in Hunger Games.)
While Hunger Games and Divergent are both future set and have a similar concept (main character lives in a poor society), Divergent was easier to understand and more believeable. While Hunger Games flet like it was thrown together and was all about revenge.
I don't know about you, but it does get old (and annoying) hearing all about Hunger Games. It feels like the Twilight stage all over again.

I read both. But if I had to pick it would be Hunger Games. I wasn't really too impressed with the ending for Divergent and I still have a problem of how Tris died and how it was handled in the end.

I really enjoyed both series, but if I had to pick, (sorry) I would pick The Hunger Games. Something about the plot and how each book was extraordinarily compelling drew me in. Also, I HATED the end of the Divergent series. It got too confusing for me, as well as unsatisfactory.

honestly i love divergent, but the hunger games is better written. even though mockingjay wasn't as good as i hoped it would be, the first book kept me up until 3am reading it!

I prefer Hunger Games because of the characters, and Suzanne Collin's writing style. I believe it is perfectly paced. I can connect to Panem more than I can to the factions. I, myself, have never been a massive fan of the divergent. I'm not saying I didn't enjoy it, which I did. Tris and Tobias's romance was nice, but in my opinion, Peeta and Katniss's were beautiful.

I personally have never read the Hunger Games Series, with some novels like Twilight, and the Divergent Series I think they are worth reading after I have already seen the movies, but with this series and Harry Potter for instance I don't think it is worth it. Therefore I do believe when comparing the two movies that the Hunger Games movies were better than the Insurgent and Allegient movies which were apart of the overal Divergent Trilogy, but I don't think when ever comparing the movies of the Hunger Games series and the Divergent Series books that the Hunger Games will ever win.

Divergent #1 is better than HG #1-( Both of the first ones are my fav in the series)
HG #2 is better than Divergent #2- same for the last books

Divergent all the way

I loved them both...But I would most definitely rank The Divergent higher than The Hunger Games. I'm not sure why though...I might be biased because it was divergent that bought me to the dystopian world, and as my first read it would always my top book.

Personally, I feel like Divergent had soo much character development. The TrisFour romance was way more compelling than Everlark, the way they both accepted they liked each other but the stretch of romance to the third book to finally be 'together'. I'm not saying THG wasn't like that but there was a whole lot of tension brewing between Tris and Four. I know Tris goes through a lot of personality shifts (Like crying a lot and then back to being badass and then guilt tripping and taking the blame for everything ) but it was better than being in denial 24X7 like Katniss. And the ending - Tris's death was traumatic for every fan ever, one of the saddest endings that the main leads didn't end up together but THG ending was more painful for me. Katniss was so traumatized in the end and I hated that. At least, in Divergent, Four was finally accepting Tris's death and was almost getting his closure.

Please don't hate me for this...These are just my thoughts.

Hunger games

I have to go with divergent for 1 reason: the love stories. I disliked the 3rd book of each trilogy equally, but an unpopular opinion I have is that I really don't like Katniss and Peeta together. Throughout both the books AND the movies, I felt like there really wasn't enough of them together or yearning for each other. Yes, Katniss was yearning for Peeta in Mockingjay, but to be honest, I didn't really see that much of their relationship building up over the first two books.

I personally liked the hunger games better, just the plot and the characters were written better

Personally, I think The Hunger Games is better.

Hunger Games was 100% better.
I get why some people love Divergent, but honestly I'm not one of them.

Excuse me, how is this even a discussion? The hunger games were SO MUCH BETTER for so many reasons.
I loved the first book from Divergent, and I wholeheartedly believe that it should've been a standalone. The second and third book were worth 0/5 stars, in my opinion.
I really dislike Four's character. Him and Tris are a very typical alpha-male+dramatic-girl couple.
On the other hand, the Hunger Games trilogy was worth 4-5 stars for me. I loved everything about it, the characters, the worldbuilding, the plot... Not to mention that Veronica Roth admitted to making Tris die at the end of Allegiant to make her story different from the Hunger Games

i have to say divergent for the sole fact that i literally couldnt finish hunger games. i was so bored of it and the writing style did not catch my attention. please don’t hate me for this lol

Divergent for life

The hunger games is better in my opinion. Idk why but it really bothered me how in Insurgent Tris seemed to be crying/sobbing 90% of the book. I also feel like THG is more complex in its dystopia and way more realistic to our world.

I would prefer divergent but it is really close they are both good.TBH I only really the first books in both the series I feel like the authors started slacking off other the first books.

I have not read Hunger Games. I started it because I really liked the movies, but honestly, I quickly got into the Divergent series after the movies. I have not finished either series, but I love Roth's writing style. I also like Tris better than Katniss. I connected with her more. I also love Four. The romance between Tris and Four was phenomenal; they are one of my favorite literary couples. As far as the worlds, I would say Hunger Games was a little more compelling and flowed better in this respect.

I liked how Divergent had more character development than the hunger games.

I read both series and I'm not so sure. And I'm not so sure about the Divergent series ending. I heard that Four dates Christina in the 'we can be mended'. Like, Four moving on after Tris's death is fine, but he moved on too fast and I feel like Four and Christina just betrayed Tris.

I prefer Divergent because of the endings.
It seems like there are more happy ending books than endings that you don’t expect to happen. The ending in the Divergent series was one of those that you don’t expect it to happen. In the Hunger Games is one of those happy endings. Happy endings get boring after a while.

I'd be lying if i said i enjoyed them both equally. But really, I only realy enjoyed the first hunger games book, and kind if trailed off in the second and didnt make it to the third. Whereas Divergent was had a more intense storyline the whole way through the trilogy and a better love story. I prefer Divergent over Hunger Games.

I like divergent better, just.....I found the relationship between tris and four (Tobias) was more annoyance than that of then hunger games, in my opinion. I'm just not a fan of the endings for both books though.

I preferred Divergent over Hunger Games. Both excellent... but I found yet another love triangle in the Hunger Games just tedious. The one on one relationship between Tris and Four was less so.

I think the tension between the two before they were "together" made for far more entertaining reading. Authors should try and stretch that out longer in general... before the protagonists hook up.

Having said that, I think either of these stories would have been just as enthralling, if not more so, with less emphasis on the romantic plot lines.

Just my two cents. I'll certainly be re-reading both of the series in the future I'm sure.

I liked both pretty equally, though I'd have to say Divergent mainly because the ending of the Hunger Games didn't sit well with me. I liked both pretty equally though.

I will be a minority in this discussion and say that I preferred HG over Divergent. Both series had a weak finish in their 3rd books, so they are equal there. Otherwise, I just prefer the story in the HG better than the one in the Divergent series. I don't necessarily think one is "better" than the other, I just have a clear preference.

Both series were great but I prefer Divergent over Hunger Games. The ending of Divergent is heartbreaking yet dramatic and perfect with Tris's death. The Hunger Games had a sort of happy ending except Prim & Finnick died. I don't know. Maybe, I just do prefer stories with tragic endings. Just saying. :)

I enjoyed both, but love Divergent series that little bit more.
Not sure why exactly.
It might have something to do with the fact that there's no love triangle in Divergent. Or maybe because I've not long finished the Divergent series and so it is more fresh in my mind.
Or it could even be because everyone seems to be going crazy about hunger games and it just gets kinda old, you know?
