Jane (PS) | 24359 comments Right-e-o! We are underway.

1. You are free to name your team. This is not mandatory, but it is fun. Given we are an open/public group with no age limit, so please make sure any chosen name is smart, not smutty ;)

Please PM your name to me by 1 Feb.

2. Pick a Team Captain. The team captain will track the books read by the team and notify me in a separate thread of the team's completions. They will also double-check that your book selection complies with the rules - eg make sure that the post is as per the formatting and information requested below (msg 3).

Anyone is free to ask questions in the Q&A/Announcement thread - here. If you are unsure, please ask.

Once a Captain has been decided, the Team Captain should reserve a couple of posts in this thread to track the book selection and completion.

3. Introduce yourself to your team. Definitely let your team members know where you are from. This is a 'nice to know' when categories are announced and when team-mates can expect other members to post their book choices.

4. If you have a private profile, please 'friend' your team-mates. This is really important, because without this, your team-mates can't see your shelves to select a books under option 2.

5. Please make sure you post your book selection in the format provided below. (This format is also posted in both the Q&A and Sign-Up threads.) We need to know the week that each book corresponds to, the page numbers, and how the book qualifies (where applicable), etc. I can't stress this enough.

6. You MUST check in with your team each week, ideally once the theme is announced. Please let your team know if you except to have spotty communication or are on holidays or having an operation.

7. When you post the completion of your book, you must post a review; enough for us to know you have actually read the book. Please don't link to a review. You must post the review in this thread.

8. Re-reads are allowed but you can't read the same book twice within this challenge.

9. There is no prize for the winning team - bragging rights only :)

The Rule on the Pass Option
* Each team can only have ONE member using their pass each week.
* Each member can only use that pass once each 4 weeks.
* No-one can use the pass option in the last week of the challenge.

Precis covers the theme.

****************

Sample post - completion

Week 3: Dark Desire (Dark, #2) by Christine Feehan Dark Desire - 4 stars.

I found this book a bit dark. (Huh - well perhaps I should have expected that!) However once I settled into the 'theme' of more extreme violence and I knew what to expect, I really enjoyed it. I can't handle too many scary scenes! (Yes, I read vampire books voluntarily...)

Jane (PS) | 24359 comments Hi everyone - I still haven't heard from Shannon. She lives in the UK and is no doubt asleep. Your team is one of only two teams with 5 members, so if Shannon opts out, you'll be back to the normal 4 members :)

~KarenH~ | 11382 comments Hi everyone!

This is my first experience with a group challenge, but I'm looking forward to it! I read just about anything in the romance genre (and occasionally other things too, but not much lately), as long as the story is good and I can connect with the characters, I'm not particularly picky about sub-genre, heat level, etc. I live on the west coast of the US, NW Washington state to be exact, so that puts me in the Pacific time zone. I can't wait to get to know you all and get this challenge started! :D

Wow - quiet in here Karen ;) I'm sure it will hot up soon though :)

~KarenH~ | 11382 comments Yes, I am feeling a little bit lonely...but I'm sure you're right, someone will join me soon. Unfortunately, I'm off to bed in just a few minutes!

Tina (whitley97) | 232 comments Hey team!! I have done team challenges before and they are lots of fun. I read just about anything and always have something onme for when I find even just a few minutes of free time. I live in New Jersey! Can't wait to get started!

message 10: by ~KarenH~, Moderator (new)

~KarenH~ | 11382 comments Hi Tina! *waves*

I'm really looking forward to this! Our group is spread out all over the world, so it should be interesting. Do you have any feelings one way or another about being team captain (depending on what the others think when they join us, of course)? I can do it if nobody else wants to, but since I've never done a group challenge before, I'd be happier if someone else did it. Hopefully we'll hear from the others soon! :D

message 11: by Ana (new)

Ana | 55 comments hi! i havent done a lot of reading lately and i miss it so i thought trying a challenge will give me motivation to put my spare time to better use:)
i like reading classics chicklit and fantasy mostly but i am open to trying new genres
i live in Romania, my time zone is GMT+2 i dont know exactly how to compare the zone
i am not interested in being a team captain, so i will support anyone who is
hope we'll have fun together:)

Tina (whitley97) | 232 comments This is only my 2nd challenge and I do most of my posts from my nook and phone so it would be hard for me to be caption

message 13: by Lili (new)

Lili | 343 comments Hey team!, lucky number 7!!

Hola from Mexico, I live right below Arizona so I'm an hour ahead of you Karen. I've played in different team challenges before, we've won some and lost some but always had fun.
I'm an engineer who ended up as a math teacher for 13-15 year-old kids and I also work at a local university with college and postgraduate courses. I looove teaching, it's fun and challenging and frustrating as hell but it's my calling in life.

Right now I'm swamped with work and that's how it'll be for the next few weeks so I can't volunteer as a team captain. I think Karen should do it if she wants to since it's how we learn... and don't worry, we won't leave you alone, we're here to help with whatever question you might have.

message 14: by Lili (new)

Lili | 343 comments I'm really, really bad at team-name picking... sooo bad, I apologize in advance :/

I'll give it a shot but don't expect much, let me think about it and I'll get back with a few name choices for us... umm...

message 15: by Lili (new)

Lili | 343 comments oh!... by the way... I'm not sure I understood exactly how this game is played so I might have some questions once we get started

message 16: by ~KarenH~, Moderator (new)

~KarenH~ | 11382 comments Hi, Lili!

I don't know that I'd go so far as to say I WANT to be captain, I was really kind of hoping to just play this round since I've never done a group challenge before. I do have the time though, and I'm sure I can figure out the tracking and reporting as I go, so I don't mind doing it if nobody else wants to...which so far seems to be the case!

Does anybody have any ideas for a team name? I don't have a creative bone in my body, so I'm pretty much useless for that.

Tina (whitley97) | 232 comments How about Lucky Charms for a team name?

message 19: by ~KarenH~, Moderator (new)

~KarenH~ | 11382 comments Tina wrote: "I can help you out if you can load the reports. "

Thanks, Tina...I appreciate the offer of help, and I may need to take you up on that at some point! I'm not really concerned about it though, I've hosted enough other challenges that I'm comfortable with tracking the info, just never in a team format before.

We were thinking along the same lines as far as name goes, but the only thing I could come up with was Lucky Sevens...I like Lucky Charms better though, I think!

message 20: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24359 comments We are still waiting for Shannon to join us. I haven't heard from her at all but have sent a number of PMs. I would suggest that you proceed with your organising without Shannon. If she turns up in the next couple of days she can play. Otherwise I'll remove her from the line up :)

message 21: by ~KarenH~, Moderator (new)

~KarenH~ | 11382 comments Thanks Jane, that's pretty much what I was figuring on.

Does anybody have any other ideas for names? So far we have Lucky Charms or Lucky Sevens...we need to come to a decision soon so we can get the information to Jane by Feb 1.

message 22: by Ana (new)

Ana | 55 comments when is the first theme announced? i would say let's go with lucky sevens or something with 'seven' in it

message 23: by ~KarenH~, Moderator (new)

~KarenH~ | 11382 comments The first theme isn't announced until Feb 7, so we've got a bit of a wait before we can actually start reading...Jane allowed extra time since this is the first time we've had this kind of challenge in this group and she wanted to be sure there would be time to take care of anything unexpected that might come up.

Ok, we've still got Lucky Charms and Lucky Sevens for name possibilities...any other suggestions or preferences?

message 24: by Lili (new)

Lili | 343 comments I like Lucky Charms....been trying to come up with another option but...nada!

message 25: by ~KarenH~, Moderator (new)

~KarenH~ | 11382 comments Ok, it looks like the majority prefers Lucky Charms, so I'll let Jane know we're going with that! :D

This means everyone will have 9 days to read their first book. I will revert to Friday in week 2.

message 40: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24359 comments I'm posting this message in all the threads, even though you are pretty sorted on the post format...

Please use the format for posting your books as per msg 3 of this team thread. Please make a separate post (without chatter ;) for that selection AND for when you post your completion. This will make it MUCH easier for the Captain to track your books.

And please remember to mark each selection and completion post with the week number as well. This is really important, especially when we reach week 7, and book reviews and selections could cover from week 5 through to week 7.

(Selections still have to happen in the week of the theme announcement, but members can fall behind on posting their book completion by up to 2 weeks. At 3 weeks they are eliminated from the challenge.)

Great story, I love the Hathaways, they're fun and interesting.
Even though I still like the Roms and think they're HOT!, I wouldn't mind getting Harry to be a villain with me.
I wasn't sure I was going to be able to forgive him for what he did to get Poppy to marry him, it was pretty ruthless and selfish, but then he told Michael:
"She was yours, if you'd truly wanted her" a pitiless smile touching his lips "But I wanted her more"

He truly won me over with:
"Do you know what a balance wheel is?" She shook her head slightly. "There’s one in every clock or watch. It rotates back and forth without stopping. It’s what makes the ticking sound...what makes the hands move forward to mark the minutes. Without it, the watch wouldn’t work. You’re my balance wheel, Poppy."

It probably makes me a dork but I still think that is sooo romantic and sweet!!

I loved this book, with 5 kids and 2 snow days I finished it in a day and a half. Joss has had a hard life with the loss of everyone she ever cared about. When she is faced with another possible loss she must now admit to herself and the people that she cares about her true fellings before she losses anyone else.

~KarenH~ | 11382 comments Week 1: Before Jamaica Lane (On Dublin Street, #3) by Samantha Young Before Jamaica Lane - 5 stars

Every time I read a new book in this series I'm reminded again how much I enjoy Samantha Young's writing. The characters are so real, and you really feel the emotions. In this book, Nick and Olivia both suffered tragic losses during their teen years, and the experiences have interfered with their ability to develop healthy romantic relationships. I loved both characters (even if I did want to smack Nick a time or two), and thoroughly enjoyed watching them overcome their pasts to find a way to be together.
