Absalom, Absalom! by William FaulknerIt's Faulkner so reading this was a grind, but it is expertly crafted and a grind that has a designed purpose. 4/5 stars
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Philip K. Dick
Some interesting ideas and a premise that is not fully captured in the movie(s), but that also needed to be more fleshed out. 3/5 stars
Dragonfired by J. Zachary PikeSequel to Orconomics: A Satire (The Dark Profit Saga) and Son of a Liche
I thought this book lost its focus at a couple places but still a satisfying ending to one of the more entertaining trilogies I've read recently.
What Feasts at Night, it was a little bit of a disappointment; i really liked its prequel but this one fell short and didn't meet my expectations
The Last Wish by Andrzej SapkowskiVery enjoyable. A collection of the early short stories, but I liked this more than the first novel.
Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb4 stars - liked it a lot (but maybe not enough the read the rest of the series in the immediate future)
Just finished Of Blood And Fire. It was ok. Not terrible by any means. There are a couple of issues for me:
1, It being very tropey means that the start is sluggish because we know how the trope plays out. Waiting for the inciting incident with our protagonist was ok, but a bit tedious therein.
2. It didn't really feel epic. You never really get a sense of the stakes. They are there, but nothing really seems urgent and the overarching antagonist is off camera at this point. We see one of his agents, an evil sorcrer.
There are good ideas in here, but I think it may suit a younger reader looking to get into the genre. The worldbuilding is fine, but I'm not a huge fan of made up words, like 'draelid'. Why not just say dragonrider. Proprietary nomenclature is fine, but it has to be done well. Given that the dialogue can be quite contemporary at times (the hero says "hey guys!" to his pals, for example), it feels odd. Minor nitpick YMMV. Overall it's solidly average IMHO
