Hi! My name is Vikki and I'm your group leader. I'm a mom of 4 and this year I have challenged myself to read more Non-Fiction. I created this group in case anyone else wanted to join me!

Please introduce yourself here!

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Vikki, thought I'd join your non fiction group. I love having the challenge bars! I've enjoyed chatting on the other page!

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi rose thanks for joining and welcome. Spred the word!

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

I sent it to a few people from the other page.

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome to all new members!

Feel free to introduce yourself here we'd love to get to know you!

Hi Vikki! I like to read nonfiction so this group is great for me. I'm a former RN, now disabled, so I have a lot of time on my hands to read and mess about online. I have 2 grown sons, one of whom is quite troubled and lives with my husband and me. I have an 18-month-old collie Charlie who is a great companion for me--and needless to say he's quite spoiled. Looking forward to participating in this group--thanks for starting it!

Hi Terri and welcome to the group :)

My mom was an RN and I have great respect for the caring professions.

Give that woggie of yours a pat from me!

message 8: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Terri, it's great to chat with you. Your dog looks gorgeous. I recently acquired a small ball of fluff myself, also very spoilt. Having a dog is just lovely. Always someone happy to see you!
I do hope your family troubles aren't too bad and get better. It's awful having deal with those things.
I bet you have some great stories with your background as an RN, I'd love to do something like that. Did you enjoy it?

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, Rose, I loved being an RN! I spent 10 years of my career in dialysis, 10 years in hospice, and 10 years in dementia care. I ended as Director of Nursing for a dementia-specific nursing home. Then I had a variety of health problems and became unable to work due to disability. Both my fraternal grandparents had Alzheimer's Disease. It's a devastating illness, but there are so many rewards in this type of care. I consider myself very lucky. Do you work? Were you close to your grandparents? (I come from a quite dysfunctional family, and my grandparents truly saved me emotionally.)

GeneralTHC | 18 comments Hey guys! My name is Chuck. My most favorite books are typically nonfiction. I love science popularization books! This group should be perfect for me because I've resolved to read a lot more nonfiction this year. Nonfiction books don't seem to get the love they should on GR, so this is great!

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome,Chuck! Good to see you here man!

Thanks Terri! I saw it in the feed. No way I could pass this up. :)

Very similar to your situation Terri. I adored all my grandparents, I have a Nanny left and a great Granny, we have lost all the others. My best childhood memories are with my paternal grandparents. My Grandad had Christmas Haemophilia and muscular dystrophy, so by the time I was born he was already using a wheelchair quite a lot. He used to give me rides on it to the little shop in the village and let me pick £1s worth of penny sweets. He used to smell like liquorice.
My mother, who also has muscular dystrophy, though a different type. Works for a charity who support dementia carers and families.
I have a great respect for anybody who helps those with dementia and similar illnesses it's a horrific thing to see. I'm lucky in that my grandparents mostly went quite quickly and didn't suffer too much.
It's lovely to speak to someone who's dedicated their life to such a great cause.

Sorry hi Chuck!
Nice to have you join us. Let us know about the ones youd recommend. We are trying to find a group read to suit everyone too.

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

Terri - I don't currently work, I am at the moment a stay at home mum to 4 kiddies and am also off trying to get my bipolar disorder under control (registered disabled), I'm just about there :) I used to work in corporate business in investment banking.

I was close to my maternal grandma, she was my whole world and I'd visit her regularly. It almost killed me when she passed away. Now I'm loosing my mum slow too. She had a major stroke in August and she can no longer communicate.

Chuck, Hi nice to meet you! I made this group as I mostly read NF and you're right no-one seems to show NF enough love!

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Iasa and welcome to the group :) I did archeology A'level and thoroughly enjoyed it!

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

Wow there is some fascinating people in this group already, welcome Iasa.
Let's get a group read started so we can chat books!

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome, Iasa! Glad to have you as part of the group!

message 19: by Lucy (new)

Lucy Mason (lmason17) Hi everyone, my name's Lucy. I joined this group to encourage me to read more NF books - I used to read mostly NF - mainly regarding art and history - but since leaving university I've gone back to fiction. Three years later, it's time to start again!

I don't get much time to read as I work full time at an auction house in London, but make sure I use all of my commuting time wisely!

I love cookbooks and books about food / agriculture / health. My other favourite NF genres are popular science, popular economics, theology, philosophy, and - of course - history. I tend to avoid celeb bios and anything to do with war or the military. Am open-minded to try, though!

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Lucy and welcome :) I hope we can encourage you to read more NF! I like art too but mostly folk artists rather than popular art. I am afraid you're on your own with history though, I'm useless at it! You'd get on well with my DH though he loves anything to do with war and military!

Feel free to post a buddy read if there's a book you'd like to read with someone. Also we'll be voting this week on a group read so if you have a suggestion there's just time to get a recommendation on the group reads thread before the poll is posted later today!

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

Great to have you Lucy.

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome, Lucy!

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Lorah, great to have you!
I'm doing much the same. There's some really fab books out there! Check out our poll for our first group read and feel free to add a buddy read suggestion and join in all the chat.

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Lorah, welcome! Make yourself at home and take a look at the poll on our home page for our first group read! Looking forward to our discussions too!

message 25: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina Hi! Mom of 2 here! I read primarily non-fiction with the exception of the monthly fiction selections of my book club.

Always looking for good book suggestions!
Thanks for starting the group! :)

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Sabrina! Good to have you here! Your book consumption sounds like mine. I'm a mostly NF kind of gal. Welcome to the group and make yourself at home!

message 27: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey Sabrina, nice to have you!
