new_user My Wicked Enemy comes to mind. The author was too busy introducing the crazy magic system and the other characters, so the romance took a backseat.

The one I'm reading now, Eve of Darkness, spends a lot of time introducing. The romance is still there, but not really a plot, LOL.

This is probably most common in PNR. I don't think I've seen it in HR, fortunately.

Eastofoz Yup and good question too Rane :)

I'd agree with you for Kleypas' Bow Street Runners--but I only read the first one so it's good to know that the better ones are coming seeing as it's a fan favourite series.

I'd have to save that the BDB, IAD, Quinn's Bridgertons, McCarty's Hells 8, Monroe's Mercenaries (to some extent) & Stuart's Ice series all suffered from this too for me. Luckily I continued on though and was well rewarded.

Thats true I have noticed that a lot of series get better with each book, but the first in the series is a total dud! It's a good idea for discussion Rane, b/c it warns people not to judge the series based on the first book! :)

Nona (goodreadscomnona) | 102 comments I tend to read the first or second then drop the series, I good with 2-3 book series but when it's more then that I tend to stop reading them and move on to the next book that catches my eye.
