Edward Lee Growing up as a slave, not much was given besides the basic necessities such as food, clothes and a roof over their head. No reading/learning was allowed, but one night, when young Booker heard a man read aloud a newspaper, and saw that a crowd of people drew to him, listening intently, that is when he too, wanted to learn to read. All he had was an alphabet book given to him by his mother, he had no clue what the sounds of the letters were, but he didn't let that stop him. He found the man who read the papers, he learned, and he even figured out what his name looked like. This was a simple story to tell children about the importance of reading, of education and how we should all strive to want to learn more, like young Booker wanted to.
