I take it you have not read Thomas Covenant Chronicles? Nobody come anywhere close to him as a Master Whiner.

Jefferson Smith (jeffersonsmith) Interesting take on Covenant, Evgeny. I didn't see him as a whiner at all. I saw him as fundamentally conflicted by a VERY powerful dilemma. In order to survive in the real world, he absolutely MUST maintain his belief in his powerlessness. Yet here he was, in what he was half sure was just a fantasy dream, offered absolute power. The seduction of being offered that, while knowing that if you accepted it, you may very well be condemning yourself to accidental death by rotting once the dream was over... I found that a very believable conflict.

Although Linden Avery was a character I could have done without. :-)

Agreed!!! I thought Covenant was a horrible person and the biggest crybaby ever.

Poor, little Thomas! As I've heard in these years, is not very popular. I've only read the first cycle and I fully agree. I don't know if I'll ever read the rest.

I even broke up with the guy who rec'd that to me, lol.

Scott Well in regard to WOT, the gender relations are the main reason I stopped reading them...just couldn't stand it anymore.

I think Joffrey is supposed to be a villain, but I'd pay to slap Sansa...shes a Stark and I think shes supposed to be a likeable character, but she's not.

And from the Night angel trilogy, wanted to slap Logan when hes trying to give his kingdom away....

message 57: by Scott (new)

Scott I have always wondered about what the relationship was between Robert Jordan's wife/gf and himself, as well as him and his mother, to have so many such issues in his books. He needed to lie down on a couch and have a long talk with someone.

message 58: by Jefferson (new)

Jefferson Smith (jeffersonsmith) Yeah, the whole misogyny thing gets a bit heavy, doesn't it?

As for Sansa, no, I'd have to say that she is not intended to be a likeable character. My suspicion is that she was originally intended to have a redeeming character arc, and become likeable later, but then that plan kind of got lost in the bedlam.

message 59: by Lee (new)

Lee I do feel sorry for Sansa. Somewhat. I don't know about being 'likable' but I believe she's supposed to be an innocent victim.

Yes yes yes. I quit reading WoT several times for this exact reason. Eventually I worked through it, but several of the middle books went flying.

I also always wondered what Jordan's relationships with his mother and wife were like.

I believe his wife was the editor as well, so it's all very odd to me.

Almost all of his books contain dedications to his wife where he called her love of his life. Go figure.

Joffrey in Game of Thrones."

Yeah, Ce'Nedra gets on my nerves. But Eddings is horrible at writing real women characters. Even with Leigh helping out. All of his women are asshole-y nag-gers with attitude problems.

LOL....asshole-y. So true! And all the men were petrified of them.

Yes! ANd I hate that, you know? I never believed the relationships due to the carping and the attitude. Who would want to be around them?

It's a shame Eddings wrote them like that. I love the books, even with these flaws, but they could have been soooo much better. At least a little variety from one female character to the other. His Sparhawk series isn't much better.

It's true though. I rolled my eyes a few times and wanted to just hang out with the guys. They were way less controlling and demanding.
