sounds like it. I found an excerpt about the author. He was 18 at the time he wrote the manuscript and won Avon/Flare's writing competition.

You have no idea how long I Have searched for this.
I apparently had some details wrong (it HAS been like 30 years after all), but it couldn't be anything else.
For the record, I already went on to Amazon and ordered myself a copy... lol

I read this book when I was in middle school, so it would have been about '84 or '85.
It was about a boy who builds a large gargoyle-type creature out of foam latex, metal skeleton, and red LED lights for eyes. I believe he called the creature Surge (or maybe Serge?).
The creature comes to life and starts to build himself a mate, and tells the boy how he appreciates him bringing him to life, but now he is going to make more of his kind to go out into the world, as he knows they are superior to humans.
The only thing I can remember about the author is that he was (iirc) a teen when he wrote the book, and it won an award of some type.
All my searches have come up empty, so ANY help would be greatly appreciated.
