Ashleigh (ashleighbailey) | 221 comments I have finished Wool Omnibus (Silo, #1) by High Howey. This one had me guessing what was going to happen next all the way through. 4 stars, it just didn't have that 'something' to push it over to the 5.

I will try to review - to follow.

Is there a new rule that every book has to be a trilogy these days?

Really!? 3 books, oh dear another series. By the time I get to #3 in a series I have forgotten what happened in the last two books.

(Like now, I have started #3 Night Creatures Shine Light & I can not recall who all the characters are.)

I am not starting another series this year (with some hope) and I really should wait until all the books are out before I start a series so this does not happen LOL!

Elaine | 2001 comments Just saw that you've read it дshləigh. I'm mainly reading it on the two recommendations above and also because it says on the cover "the next Hunger Games" and I loved that trilogy. Hope you do write a review. I'll be interested to see what you thought in more detail.

Wool is one of the best books ever. The sequels are good too but not quite as good! I didn't really find it to be like the Hunger Games although I quite liked that trilogy too.

message 113: by Kira (new)

Kira (kirajessup) | 234 comments Yeah, apparently trilogies are the new "cool" when it comes to ya. I must admit I didn't buy the Hunger games series until the end of last year and I bought he divergent series just after the release of Allegiant so I had something to read on a camping trip.

I might have to get myself a copy of wool too as I am intrigued now.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Phrynne wrote: "Is there a new rule that every book has to be a trilogy these days? ."

As you can see, Twilight-With-Angels isn't going to be a trilogy :P

It's very different to the Hunger Games. Definitely much more on the science fiction than the dramallama. My hardcovers definitely look nice on a shelf though.

Up to 5 already! I hope it doesn't get boring.

I like Penryn's mother - she is my favourite.

Depends whether she can keep the level of writing up! There are a few series out there I have never finished and never will because I just got bored with them. It takes a good writer and a really good story to keep going for more than four books. J.K. Rowling did it but many don't.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) I'd argue J.K. Rowling didn't, but you know.

I believe J.K. Rowling only did 7 books because she was contracted for that many - she wanted to stop after Goblet. Could be talking out of my ass though.

It's funny that although I loved that book and gave it five stars I never followed through to the rest of the Quartet. I guess it was complete in itself as far as I was concerned and I didn't need to read any more.

I think the 4 books are all designed as interconnecting standalone stories. Am half way though and loving it so at this stage I am planning on following up with the rest

There was a chat about this on another site. I think the conclusion was that the fourth book gives more information about what happens in The Giver. You can let us know if that is true when you finish!!!

I am well into mine - Alas, Babylon - and it is fantastic! It was written in 1959 and is based on the Cold War. The premise is that the balance of power swung to Russia and they initiated a nuclear attack on the USA. I am about to find out how the survivors coped after the apocalypse. It's page turning stuff! Back to it. Bye!

I have finished Alas, Babylon. It was really very good and very thought provoking. The writing style was nice too - a little old fashioned because it is an old book, but very pleasing.

I have completed book 1 of the challenge. World Made by Hand. It was Ok. I'm not sure if the book I got was an early draft but there were a few spelling mistakes which put me off.

I am now reading The Waste Lands and I have decided to add another book to the challenge. UnWholly

Liam,

I loved it! It is a book that is either loved or totally reviled! But to does raise some very interesting concepts on how society develops and can destroy itself! It is however, a hard read - very long speeches and indepth subjects.

Finally got around to reading The Giver, I had intentionally planned to read it while I was on holidays earlier this month but forgot to upload it to my iPad before departing D: I really enjoyed this book as a short read, I pretty much read it all in one night and really recommend it to everyone as a quick read between other books (:

message 145: by Sally906 (new)

Sally906 | 86 comments I'm afraid The Maze Runnerand I parted ways and have now picked up The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey and sucked straight in. It has been a long time since a book has affected me in a physical way - I was shaking in terror at the situation - heart pumping. And there is no horrible descriptions it is just the whole atmosphere of the story. Brilliant. I had to stop reading it when hubby turned the lights off as didn't think I could cope with reading it with a back light. Picked up a light fluffy romance instead to settle the heart beat before sleep time.

Lots of people reading this one. It sounds interesting. I might add it to my TBR.

I think I am done with this challenge. I have finished three books now:
World After, Solstice: A Novel of the Zombie Apocalypse, and Counting Down. The last two were OK.

Just finished Shift Omnibus Edition (Silo, #2) for this challenge, gotta say I disagree - Shift was a much more personal and heartbreaking experience than Wool, in my opinion. I loved Wool, but Shift made me feel more.

message 150: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn | 9836 comments I loved Wool Omnibus (Silo, #1) but it sounds like I'll have to read Shift Omnibus Edition (Silo, #2) now!

I've just finished my February challenge book Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood and loved it and have put in a request at the library for the second book in the trilogy, The Year of the Flood.

I've also read Countdown City by Ben H. Winters this week. I'm not sure if this counts for the February challenge as it's pre-apocalyptic (77 days to go before the asteroid collides with Earth!) but I recommend it to anyone who enjoyed the first book in the series, The Last Policeman.
