Trilogy about a girl who goes into another world. Featured runes /s

- I read the books in the early 90s so it had to have been published before 1999, probably before 1995.
- Main character is a girl.
- She uses runes
- She goes into another world (I think)
- There is a male character who I think is in love with her but he's a bad guy
- I think the girl has to go through challenges or some kind of obstacles, with other characters, and the bad guy is in charge, like the one standing in the way to her getting home
- Included some sort of protective amulet worn around the neck
- One of the other worlds was freezing cold, or there was a scene where she is freezing to death. So she thinks about fire and imagines it warming her and then she feels fine

The board game is where the trilogy starts -- the details in the original post are all from the third book (I think; possible also the 2nd) so maybe you missed book 1, Amina?
