I have the one by Wraxall, who is the person Hugo himself selected to do the translation. I have a different version on my phone, but I'm not sure which translation it is. They both had the same issue with leaving phrases in French. I did request the Rose one that was suggested above, so I'll see if that one is any better.

i used the Norman Denny translation, which is the one that come recommended by many colleges that have Les Mis on their syllabus - and it was good - I don't remember any huge paragraphs in french

message 60: by Anne (new)

Anne | 274 comments My library doesn't have a print copy of that version, but it does have it as an e-book. It has footnotes, so that is helpful. It wasn't paragraphs that were in French; they left various idioms and song lyrics in French. Sometimes they were even left as the response to a situation, and were left with no explanation. It wasn't possible to guess the intent from the context, so it was very frustrating. Thanks for the suggestion.

it could have been that when it was translated that there weren't good enough english equivalents

Joy, I understand. I have days like that, too. : )

I love browsing all the books everyone is reading, and I have added so many to my TBR stack this week!

message 83: by Anne Hawn (last edited Jan 25, 2014 11:48AM) (new)

Anne Hawn (hawnsmith) I had pretty much success. I had books on my list that I wasn't sure I'd get to, but wanted to have enough variety to be able to read whatever I felt like reading. Unfortunately, I also had to read:

Miss Marple: The complete Short Stories (296 pages)and
The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes 321 pages

in order to use them for my granddaughter in homeschool. (deductive reasoning and vocabulary) So...I read a pretty fair amount. I am disgusted that I haven't managed to finish Mockingjay. That book has been on my iPod for about a year. I'll try to finish it today.

Mockingjay (I will finish this by tomorrow!!)
Longbourn
More Than a Skeleton
Deadline
The Mysterious Howling 267 pages
The Hidden Gallery 313 pages
The Unseen Guest 340 pages
The Interrupted Tale 320 pages
The Hyde Park Headsman
The 9th Girl 190 pages

Total 2047 RAT pages !

Angels Flight - 204 pgs

Day 7 total: 324 pgs

This was a great Read-a-thon for me. I enjoyed neglecting other things in order to read! (That's why I can't do a Read-a-thon EVERY week...)

As always, it was fun to read everyone's updates. Looking forward to the next one.
