I'm in favor of locks, cameras, guns, and anything else that increases my odds of not getting beat up or knifed, yeppers, fraid so. I have embraced this plan with the fervor of a religious convert.

That is terrifying. Good luck!
There is nothing more creepier and well, there's another word I need, but I can't think of what it is. I just would hate having someone else moving around MY space when I'm not there. My private space that makes me feel safe and comforted, and all that. You know?

Irritated works for me today as well. Irritated beyond belief.
Sometimes being surrounded by books all day isn't a good thing when most of them aren't mine. At home, I say what goes and what stays on the shelf. Here, I have no control when someone upstairs tells me to weed yet MORE books, because guess what? Yeah, we ordered new books. So our numbers went up. So we need to weed more. UGHHHHHH!!! What can I say to get this frustration across?!?! I weeded everything I could already! And then weeded more!
Sorry, rant over. For now.

Still, the area where I am currently is way more secure than Kari's, so I should feel blessed. :)"
You know I don't wanted offend you and I hope your situation improved in short time.

This is actually a very good part of the area to live, solid middle to upper-middle class neighborhood. It's just one problem family who moved next door about 10 years ago. Notorious in 2 counties. They're trash and I don't say that lightly.

I live in a very good neighborhood (by this hell hole of a swamp standards) and I had my dad's car window broken (while parked in my driveway), and my house alarm has been triggered twice. I don't go to bed without setting on the alarm and, you betcha, it's connected to a monitoring service.

*hugs*

But for ex. in Italy you don't often find houses with open gardens or unprotected nice things outside. And when there are constructions works outside they have to protect the machines, for ex. you often see small heavy machines suspended in the air to a crane.

Kinda sad, isn't it? The whole time I was growing up in central WV, I can't remember locking our house even once. Truth is, before this family moved here, none of us locked our houses, either. :(
Anyhoo, my word for the day -- Whoa.

Yep, I grew up and live in a small town in VA. We never locked our doors. We've had a rash of home and car break-ins lately, in town and in the country. DH had some cash and small items stolen from his car, luckily nothing too valuable.
Of course, we didn't have to worry about heroin and meth when I was growing up, either. :(
My grandparents never locked their door in northern New Hampshire. Until recently. Since my grandfather isn't there year round any more, no one's there. Someone stole a few of his guns and knives. Now everyone makes sure the door is locked.
Funny story about locked doors and guns in NH. This was a few years ago, I don't remember who was visiting the local high school, but it was somebody important, like the vice president, or governor, or someone like that. The students were told the day before to keep their guns at home because of the visitor. Well, a friend of my cousins was on his way to school with his mom when he remembered his still had his gun in the back seat of the car. His mom thought quickly and turned into my Aunt's driveway. No one was home, but since no one locks their doors up there they were able to get into the house to leave the gun there for safe keeping.
Awhile later, my grandfather comes home as he'd been staying with my Aunt for awhile, looks at the gun, and thinks "I don't remember leaving my gun there."
lol, it was all straightened out, but it just goes to show how trusting people are up there and how guns are taken for granted.

We had to take hunter safety (gun safety) classes in HS. I have never even held a gun, but most people I know have guns in their homes. My dad and brother hunt and have lots of guns (locked up!). I personally do not like guns, and do not get me started on the NRA and gun laws. ;-) Also, one of my HS classmates was accidentally shot and killed by his friend. Alcohol, and stupidity I'm sure, were involved. :(

Lockless. Now there is a fascinating idea. But to succeed it would require an educated and very civilized society, I fear.

The idea of small machines suspended in the air to protect them is so fascinating! Even surreal.

I have to admit, that the idea of guns being an ordinary thing to bring to school, gives me pause. A very alien concept to me.
The only guns that are kept in houses here, are for those who hunt, and there are strict rules in place on how they shall be kept.

Yes. I do not understand how so many people can be earnestly, passionately against obviously sensible things like background checks and restrictions on where weapons can be carried.
That is a level of paranoia that is beyond my comprehension. In fact, if these people are correct in their fears and suspicions of the world around them, it's all over anyway. So they may as well relax.
**I say this as a lifelong gun owner.

Yes, especially rational restrictions applied in every other civilised country.

The first time I noticed something similar near Milano (me coming from the quiet province) it was a small road roller suspended to a crane. I had to ask the friends I was travelling with about this strange habit.

It's common around here too and I find it funny what different gadgets will hang from cranes, like buzz saws or concrete mixers or metal fence elements. :-D

Yes, indeed, do you know the books from Erich Fromm? I hope that people can learn to live together and have more respect and tolerance for the fellow human being.

LOL, indeed. :-) My mini-holiday is Thursday-Sunday. We always have a day off on May 1st (May Day) but for some (to me) unknown reason the school is off also on Friday this year. I'm not complaining. :-)

KWYM. Had to dump a flood of water out of my drowning plants and the teeny tiny creek down the hill behind our house that normally trickles has been whooshing. I haven't been down to look, but I don't think the Potomac is flooding yet, though.
