The Best Thing About Today...

I'm listening to the first 15 minutes of The Curse of the Blue Scarab. I'm SO pleased with Alexander Masters' reading of this. He's doing this exactly right. It sounds like Sherlock Holmes o..."
I love Alexander Masters. What wonderful news.

MADHATTER
Is that one word? I am feeling madhatterish as I race from tea party to tea party. ;-D
Remind me next year--no. Never mind. I don't listen. Let's face it. I DON'T LISTEN.

Me too! One of the best comfort foods out there.
Lasagna is the chosen dish of my older daughter's birthday dinners. It's also one of the few dishes I traditionally make. By traditionally I mean that I'm the cook (usually my husband is our "cook"), not that it's an old family recipe. In fact I mostly improvise based on a Joy of Cooking recipe, usually a non-meat version. Since we're no longer always able to be together for her birthday, my daughter bakes her own version.

As in, the holiday's over, I have to wear shoes again, my mum is back at home, real life re-commences. Sigh. :) Hi everyone!
We had a great time on our tropical island family vacation and have returned to proper summer weather and lovely warm sunny days and suddenly it's Christmastime and I'm working lots. Happy December! :)

Hi Alison, I have missed you badly. I am happy to have you back!
Ooohh, lasagna! That used to be my family's Christmas Eve dinner if we had friends over. :-)
I found a really good one-skillet recipe for lasagna a few months ago that turned out to be really good and super easy to make!
Though if we're talking birthday dinners, spaghetti is mine!

I also have fond memories of the mythical lasagnas of my childhood.
We used to go and fetch them on Sundays, always with the same orange/red Tupperware container, from a very modest family run restaurant situated 50 m from the entrance of the house, but also 112 steps away because we we lived at the fifth floor.
My mother also made lasagnas now and then, but those from the restaurant were a poem.
Now that I think of it, I can't imagine 5 persons getting enough lasagnas from that container, I suppose my parents would eat less than us.

How lovely that you could spend time with your mom! And a tropical island family vacation sounds really good.

Yes, it was really good. My brother and SIL came too, so it was a happy little beach party. We don't see nearly enough of each other.
So many lasagna-lovers here! Loved reading everyone's lasagna memories. :-D
And welcome back Alison! :-) Your tropical island family vacation sounds wonderful! I'm so glad to hear you got to spend leisurely time with your loved ones who live so far away from you.

This is very touching, Antonella. And it provoked a memory out of me. :-) Before we built our summer cottage by the lake there used to be just a teeny-tiny cottage there. (Actually it's still there side by side with the newer, bigger one — Antonella and Calathea might remember it from their visit.) Anyways, I spend many of my childhood summers there with my parents and my godmother (dad's sister). Afterwards I've wondered how in the world all four of us fit sleeping there! There's just a small bed clearly made for two persons, but we always slept crosswise on it. And everyone knows how much room a small child can take while sleeping! So, it must have been a very tight fit for the grown-ups.:-)

I was thinking the same thing. :-) All those little, invisible sacrifices the adults around us made -- and that we then make for the kidlings in our lives. :-)
