Lol, yes, I've had this game and an instruction book for years but never could understand it. But I want to start a chess club at work so I really need to know how to play. I picked up the book yesterday and it started making sense to me. Finally! I've always wanted to understand this game.

You know, for four years in a row my husband gave me a "Word a Day" calendar... to his utmost detriment. He calls me a "pedant."

I, in the other hand, think that the English language is rich and beautiful, and yes, I think insouciance is a wonderful word. I strive to be more insouciant than my usual... which is always worried.

Ha! Well, Vivian, as long as being pedantic is mixed with an equal amount of common sense, there's nothing wrong with that! :).

I agree. English has absorbed so many other words from so many other cultures and languages, it is rich and amazing.

Only some of my long weekend goals didn't happen. The ones that did get done though, I'm glad. They're things that don't happen often enough.

Yes, Zombies were definitely a woot!

I will pass these on to Matt. He needs them pretty badly right now. I'm hoping the further away from chapter two I get, the more reason he'll have to celebrate, judging by the book summary. But right now, life is hell for him.

2048 game (takes away the boredom, is addictive, simple to play, hard to win, and free for the phone or internet. Yeah, this is a bad game to play. lol.)

Alison | 4756 comments Oh dear, that sounds a bit dire. Here are some other words to counteract the above:
Ice cream!
Monty Python!
Drambuie!
Hugs!

I just listed my piano for sale a few minutes ago and I'm dying a bit inside. Time to curl up on the couch.

They're something special, right, instruments? I get that's not easy to part with them. I have a guitar sitting around in my appartment that I tried to learn to play twenty years ago and never managed to. But I can't give it away either.

message 945: by Alison (new)

Alison | 4756 comments A very nice man called me up last night to buy my piano and will come and pick it up today. I'm so glad he seemed a good person. Funny how you always hope nice people will buy your stuff, or I do, anyway.

So much stuff has been leaving my house and my life recently because of the upcoming move. I've sorted out all my dad's stuff and my grandparents's books and my dad's books and my own junk from long ago and the thing that has been by far the hardest to part with is the piano. It's a beautiful worn old upright that my dad bought a few years before I was born. My parents were the sort who had dinner parties and drank martinis with interesting people and my dad would play the piano and people would sing and it was all terribly sophisticated. Growing up, we'd always sing at the piano at Christmas with family who had come to visit for the holiday. We had a lot of good times around the piano. I had lessons for many years when I was little and played quite a lot in high school. It's like saying goodbye to a great friend for the last time. But I look forward to my next piano (which will be a New Zealand piano!) and starting fresh. I am a sentimental old fool. :)

Of course, but also no, not at all. Things, as well as places, are infused by our experiences and made precious in memory. I empathize completely. And yes, it does seem to matter that we find good homes for certain things. : )

Oh, Alison. Thank you for sharing your piano's story — I can perfectly see why it's so tough for you to part with it. And I'm glad to hear you've found a new, loving home for it. I had to sold my piano (that I got from my godmother when I was only one years old) a few years ago and I still miss it.
