“A Song for the Dying”
by
Stuart MacBride
This the second book involving Ash Henderson finds him being violently assaulted in a prison corridor by two thugs. What is he doing here ? If you have read first novel “Birthdays for the Dead” you will recall a harridan of a woman framed Ash for a murder. Found Not Guilty she organises inmates to beat him up then claim he attacked them. Every six months his case is reviewed, every six months release is refused. The Harridan has him where she wants him until she tires of her fun and has him murdered.
Two years pass this way then he is released under strict supervision into the care of a Detective Superintendent Jacobson to help catch a serial murderer. Nurses are being abducted, ripped open, and stitched up again with a plastic doll placed inside their abdomens. A few actually survive.
We meet the other members of the team of lateral thinkers assigned to the case, including the psychiatrist from the first novel and they get to work at a secret location.
Ash however has only one plan, to kill his enemy the harridan before she kills him but he must make plans and bide his time. He is handicapped by having to wear an ankle bracelet which monitors his movements.
Like the previous novel this one is not for the squeamish; allowing for that it’s a great read. Things get complicated when one of the nurses snatched just happens to be the daughter of the most feared man in Scotland.
Wee Free McFee is a bad tempered lay preacher in the Scots Free Kirk who quotes from the Bible as he attacks his targets. There are numerous Protection Orders imposed on him, all from serving policemen in fear of life and limb.
So the tale progresses, will Ash manage to kill that evil Harridan before she kills him ? Will the Team find the culprit ? Will Ash be returned to jail if he survives it all ? To reveal any more would ruin things for the Reader.
As usual all I will say is Buy the book it’s worth it and when in Scotland steer well clear of crabbit wee Lay preachers.
