A Morningstar (almorningstar) | 24 comments Gargoyles... I think they'd make for interesting reading.

They do, they do! Lol Try White Hot Kiss by Jennifer L.Armentrout. There are some in there :)

message 53: by Teresa (new)

Teresa There are a bunch a wicked supernatural creatures in Filipino folklore but they are not the sexy romance story type of creatures. I think the problem is as far as underused paranormal creatures is that a lot of the paranormal books have a romantic story in them as well and I just can't see a gargoyle or troll love story.

Eliot Baker | 10 comments I got really into griffins, or gryphons, when I saw how ubiquitous they have been as symbols from ancient Mesopatamia and Greece to the alchemists and modern Masons. Not a whole lot of novels out there featuring gryphons though.

I'm partial to plain old fairies, but haven't read something with them that I really enjoy. I love the idea of trolls and someone back there mentioned gargoyles--genius! You guys are giving me soooo many ideas :)

Blood Oath by Samantha Coville"

Samantha, your story sounds good. I'm going to add it to my list!

Samantha, your story ..."

Me too! I can't wait to read it!

Jennifer McDonald (JenMcDonald) | 69 comments I write about Veilwalkers, a sub-race of warlock who can separate their souls from their body and cross into the realm of the dead. They're hunted by larger covens and forced to use their abilities to spy from the veil.
It's fun because I get to write about two totally different sets of characters: the magical creatures in the living world and brutalized spirits trapped in purgatory.

Kayti Raet | 6 comments mermaids but not a romance one and legendary creatures from other countries, that'd be cool.

Mack Moyer (mackmoyer) | 6 comments L.L. wrote: "I know I'm in the minority, but I reckon the ugly guys deserve their time in the moonlight! Why must all paranormal creatures be super sexy extraordinarily attractive sluts?..."

Yes, this. There are far too many sexy monsters in the world right now. I'm so sick of the "monster is a symbol of sex." Sometimes I just want a goddamn monster.

message 61: by Rinelle (new)

Rinelle Grey (rinellegrey) I don't tend to write creatures too much, but my fantasy novel, Twin Curse ended up with some trolls, who will be getting their own book in the sequel. That's going to be hard to write as a romance! And my other series will be getting a human/alien romance as well. Don't know why I'm doing it too myself. I think I'm going to have to do some reading as research...

Victoria Rice (victoriarice) | 3 comments J. wrote: "The most common creatures I see come up are vampires, werewolves, witches and fairies. Zombies have also been on a hot streak lately as have angels. I like the idea of trolls or non-European monste..."

Sounds Awesome! So many great suggestions.

Katie Tillwick (cherrystone) | 1 comments I just joined this group, but find this meme great! I recently wrote a short story using centaurs, an underused creature in my opinion.

What about the Chinese dragon? Haven't seen those often. Or Ancient Egypt, like the Apophis monster?

message 64: by Josephine (new)

Josephine McNabb | 45 comments I added in a pixie into my second book (yet to be released) and even made up my own kind of demon monster. It was very ugly. :)

message 65: by Kat (new)

Kat Desi (katdesiwrites) In one of my urban fantasy short stories I used the Mari-Morgans from Breton Mythology. They are water spirits that lure men to death with their own beauty or with glimpses of underwater gardens decorated with gold or crystals.

message 66: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Lamb (doc_andy) | 19 comments My latest creation, Serpent of the Tyche - http://bit.ly/1kfkK0z, makes use of some other ancient mythological characters. Specifically, Stheno and Euryale who were Medusa's sisters.

But I also enjoy making some new ones up. The opening chapter has a Were-Rhino. What can I say? It was fun.

message 67: by Daphne (new)

Daphne Chennault (daphnech) | 18 comments I am working on a fantasy using multiple breeds of Fairies, and the varying ways that they interact with or trick humans. One of the things that has come out of my research is that Fairy legends have have many common threads, one of which being that Fairies have a much darker aspect than the ethereal ones that humans give them.

Other creatures that have not been represented in literature much are Kappas (Japanese Mythology), nymphs (Greek), and Mermaids. In a piece of fanfic I did many years ago I used aquatic creatures called Orkneyjar.

message 68: by Alyson (new)

Alyson Stone (alysonserenastone) | 194 comments I think that creatures from folklore that isn't Greek or Chinese are really under used.

message 69: by S. (new)

S. (scopperstone) | 9 comments I like the Greek/Roman and ancient Egyptian gods and creatures. I'd like to read more of these.

I use ancient Egyptian, Anubis-types and others in my latest: "The High King's Embalmer" http://www.amazon.com/High-Kings-Emba...

And, I use centaurs in my Old West story currently on jukepop: "Two Bits"
https://www.jukepop.com/home/read/1345

I'm so tired of zombies (unless they are used in voodoo-type stories, instead of virus-based). Vampires and werewolves have been over done also. It's a shame too. I believe there can still be some great vampire stories yet to be written, and have been written, but a certain movie/book series may have ruined it for me. :-(

message 70: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Lyles (gobbledygook) | 28 comments I like aliens and robots. They are somewhat used but I think they could be used more.

message 71: by Kate (new)

Kate Whitaker | 10 comments L.L. wrote: "I know I'm in the minority, but I reckon the ugly guys deserve their time in the moonlight! Why must all paranormal creatures be super sexy extraordinarily attractive sluts? Where are the goblins, ..."

absolutely! I'm kind of over super pretty, uber rich, highly sexual characters. They have their place, but there's a lot more life out there.

message 72: by Kate (new)

Kate Whitaker | 10 comments While my main characters are werewolves, I try to have them fight all kinds of different monsters, pretty, human-esque vampires, animalistic vampires, banshees, brownies, succubus, sheepsquatch, talasam, etc.

And yes, sheepsquatch, a 'real' cryptid from West Virginia.

And a talasam is Bulgarian... I think, I'd have to reread my notes.
