Arghh I am in the worst reading slump ever. I wish I could say it was a book hangover after a spectacular book but sadly that isn't the case. I have only managed to read a few full length books since before xmas and that is not like me at all. If this carries on I may need to seek medical help ;-)

What do you guys do when you hit a reading slump? I'm wondering if maybe I just need to go off and read an old favourite to get me back in the reading mood.

Eliza Crewe (elizacrewe) | 1 comments Sometimes I'll read a little non-fiction. Nothing heavy, just one of the easy reads on the NYT list (blink, Omnivore's Dilemma, Freakomonics, etc.). It's a nice change of pace! Plus, I get to feel all superior for reading something "educational," :-P.

I would go and find one of my go to books - one if those that you love even when you have read it a hundred times!

P.J. O'Brien Any of those ideas would work, I think, but another possibility is to do something entirely different for awhile. Maybe there's something in your life right now that needs your attention and that's why you're antsy when trying to read.

If you don't think it's the case of your subconscious trying to redirect you to something you're neglecting, how about playing a little psychological trick on yourself so that you don't start associating reading as an obligation that you should be doing? Tell yourself very sternly that you're allowed to read only 10 minutes a day. When you find yourself going over the 10 minutes, expand it a little until you're out of the slump. Read whatever you wish in the 10 minutes, old favorite, something totally new and unlike you, bits and pieces here and there... whatever works.

Lastly, have you considered reading aloud to someone? Is there an aging reader nearby with diminishing eyesight or little ones who'd love a story? An empty chair? That often works because one reads and engages in a book in a different way when reading aloud. (Oh, and try an audio book if you haven't already.)

Good luck!

I honestly dont know what's gotten into me. I just dont want to pick up my kindle. SO i tried a paperback and i didnt want to hold those either.
I wish i could be one of those people who listen to audio books, but for some reason my brain doesnt accept someone else reading aloud as me 'reading' and it doesn't work. Even with my husband reading a news paper article, I actually have to concentrate really hard to understand what he is reading lol

I picked up a book last night i was told was a good one, i pushed myself through the first chapter, and before i knew it i was 5 chapters in. so fingers crossed. I hate not being able to read, the last time i hit a slump I didn't read for 5 years :-/ I dont think i could live with that again.

Good luck! I hope you're on your way out of the slump, but fingers crossed, just in case.

Thanks PJ.

The problem was there was so many things i wanted to do, from re-reading books, crocheting, watching some old TV shows on DVD and of course reading some new releases. At the moment I have myself on a rota working through them all in. It appears to be working.

PJ May be right Shona, maybe it's your mind telling you there's something else it fancies doing! Maybe crocheting one of those books owls...:p lol

The kids have actually given me a list of stuffed toys they want me to make. On the list is a zombie minion (because lexie cant have just a normal minion), an owl, a wolf and a mike wazowski. I have the wool for mike, i just need to make a start on him.. My rota seems to be working.
