I just finished The Star of Kazan by Eva Ibbotson. Just love her books, her style is so intriguing and vivid!
Michele wrote: "I loved The Star of Kazan! I also loved Journey to the River Sea."yes! Loved it too. Now about to begin Bel Kaufman's "Up the Down Staircase". So many books to read an no time :(
The Forbidden Library: I just started this intriguing fantasy yesterday, and am only a little way along, but am enjoying it immensely.
Re-reading the Wide-Awake Princess by Baker for a Child-Parent Book Club. We will see how many fairy tales we recognize. Any other ideas for an elementary book club activities?

We've just read Pirate Princess: Poppy and I was very impressed by the level of engagement with the plot by my daughters. I saw the book at a charity shop last week and grabbed it based on the fact that it spans their different fields of interest - pirates for the seven year old and princesses for the five year old. We read it over 3 evenings and they spent the first two comparing notes with each other as to who could have written the letter and how the pirate crew can identify the writer, Various probable and improbable scenarios were discussed. On the final evening, they spent a considerable time discussing the potential strategies involved in an attack on the pirate ship - they sat in front of the two pirate ships in my daughter's room and pointed out possibilities to each other (I'm not commenting on the feasibility of most of their plans...).
I can highly recommend it if you have exhausted the Rainbow Fairies. I love to see the girls being so involved with a book.
Long threads can cause glitchiness here on GoodReads, so I'm closing this and starting a 'part deux' - see you there!

I have been reading a real lot lately. I just this instant finished reading an ARC of The Box and the Dragonfly. It is Loooonnnng, but quite entertaining. I really liked it. I've recently finished listening to the audiobook of Between Shades of Gray. It was definitely good, but somewhat horrific. The things people do to each other is something I do not enjoy dwelling on often. The best book among my recent reads is A Monster Calls. It is a little fantasy about a dealing with grief and death. Absolutely awesome.
