Reading Goals for 2014
thethousanderclub thethousanderclub Jan 13, 2014 05:31PM
I'm a simple guy with a simple goal. I have a yearly goal of reading 24 books each year--two a month. I beat that goal by a few last year and even more the year before that. (I probably could have read more but lost focus a few times). I think 24 books in a year is reasonable considering the multitude of other demands I have in my life. However, I know it's not a particularly impressive goal compared with others'. (I personally know of two people who have a goal of reading 50 books in 2014).

What do you plan on reading this year?

The Theory of Moral Sentiments
Nudge: Improving Decisions About Health, Wealth, and Happiness
Their Eyes Were Watching God
R Is for Rocket

I'm not going to set a number but vow to read everyday. My goal is to get to some of the classics between the current stuff. Just finished Wuthering Heights for the third time and I'm now reading To Kill A Mockingbird, which I've never read yet. Pride and Prejudice, Beloved, Jane Eyre, and Les Miserable are just a few I want to get to. The Divergent series is just on the horizon, too.

I think it also depends a lot on what kind of books you read. If I read mostly adult fiction (like stuff by George RR Martin, or Dan Brown) then I can probably only do maybe 30 books in a year. But I read a lot of young adult fiction, and I can go through 1 or 2 in a normal week (or 3-4 during a light week). So my goal is 50, and I'm trying to mix is up, with some young adult fiction, adult fiction, and non-fiction.

I haven't picked specifically what books I'll be reading. Every time I go to the library, I pick 4-6 books off my list, and I'll check out 2-4 of those (putting holds on any that aren't available when I get there).

50 was also my goal last year. Then I took a class at the college in fall semester and didn't read anything that wasn't necessary for work or that class until I was done with it. In the end I only made to 41.

I don't set reading goals. I read what I like. That tends to be a lot of books. For a while I was reading these huge Dumas books, now it's smaller stuff from AE Van Vogt.

To read at least a book a week.

My goal is always 6 or more a month, but lately I've been having trouble finding books that meet my requirements (Interesting, very clean and available at the library) so I'm worried I may not make it :(

Well it's already part way through October and although I much prefer actual books, I have at least 4000 e-books on my phone. So I guess my goal extends beyond the end of the year and I will continue to read through as many novels as possible. At least until I free up enough room on my phone to squeeze more in. I'm also reading the Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant (on actual paper).

I also set my goal at 24 books. As for what I'm going to read exactly, I've already bought some of them, but I don't really plan ahead.

When I first joined Goodreads I made my goal 100, which didn't seem unreasonable, but then a lot of life stuff came up so I came nowhere close. Now I have tons of free time but all my books are in the next state over, my Kindle is broken, and I just moved to a new town so I don't have a library card yet. Might set it low this year, like 50.

I thought I would dust off some 'Classics' seeing as the concept of them was destroyed by school English classes boring the pants off me. I am giving some Russian literature a go for the first time and the first attempt (Crime and Punishment) was surprisingly readable.

It's now almost time for my loins to be girded for the big one (War and Peace).

However, Tess of the d'Urbervilles which was one of those school books can still go and live where the sun don't shine.

My goal is 100, last year I don't remember what I accomplished, but it was very high since I constantly read while we were in Hospital waiting rooms, because of my dads illness. I don't think 100 is a hard goal for me. I read every single day, so we'll see! Goodluck to everyone and their goals :)

i set my goal for 75 this year but im already 3 books behind so i might have to change it depending on how much reading i get done this week
i don't really know which books i'll be reading

My goal is at least 24 books this year. First few books on my list include Night over Water by Ken Follet, The Hit by David Baldacci and Texas Lucky by Sandra Brown.

I am doing the same thing as William is doing mixing in classic literature with current stuff. I am always conservative on my book reading goal. I would rather be over my goal. I can always increase that amount every year. My goal was 40 books. I am already 6 books ahead of schedule.

My goal is to read 30 books.

I set a goal last year of 100 (I'm a fast reader) and I only made it to 80 because I spent to much time watching tv shows. I was only 20 books short. Darn!!! So I set it for 100 again this year. I just can't loose focus like I did last year. :)

I just joined The Classics Club, so a lot of my reading this year will be poetry and classics. Other than that, I'll be reading whatever catches my interest, and hopefully reach my goal of 75 books.

Wow, how do people manage to read 100 books a year? That's a book every 3-4 days! I can read novels that fast - that too, short ones, not doorstoppers like most epic fantasy books tend to be - but not non-fiction. And since I intend to read more non-fiction this year, and I have several fantasy novels lined up, I've decided on a goal of 36 books this year (i.e. 3 per month). I might revise this upward halfway through the year, depending on how well I'm doing. I hope I'm not forced to revise it downward.

I tried 100 books last year and I didn't even get close. I'm going for 80 this year.

My goal is 50, but I really want to do a 100 :)

Every year since I joined Goodreads, my goal has been to read every book on my To Read shelf. I try to keep that shelf to things I actually will read in the reasonably near future. Unfortunately, I always end up getting sidetracked by something new or new to me. I need to go take a screen grab of my To Read shelf so I can compare at the end of the year and see how I did.

My Goal is 50 books this year. Which I think is a suitable amount for me and I've already read "10" books so far, however 4 of them are graphic novels and some are smallish children's books so I don't count them myself but Goodreads does unfortunately. I won't count these books as they are only short and I hope that by not counting them I can push myself into reading even more. I hope to read a lot more classic literature toward the middle/end of the year as I've fallen behind on my classic reading. So fingers crossed I manage it :)

Julia You can also increase your reading goal. If you read, say, 8 that you don't want to count, just increase your goal to 58. Then it's all counted and Go ...more

My goal is also 100 books, that is about three days a book which is completely reasonable for me. I don't think it's about the number though, not everyone has as much time. I intend to catch up on the current books, because I'm kind of behind in that department (a teenager who's behind on her modern, popular reading???) Anyways, I just want to read a lot this year :D

All I know is I want to read at least 20 books this year. I hit a new low last year and I'm trying to get back in the game.

Oh please dont even bother feeling little by small yearly goals...i goal only 10 because i know i wont be able to handle more than that...dude u cud have a job, studies and household responsibilities and may not have time to read books. i havent read books for one whole year due to studies and now im continuing...so dont pry on it.

I don't really set a goal during the year, I just read what I own or browse through stuff.

My goal is to read a hundred books this year. Last year I reached 80. How can I do it? Simple. I don't bother being the mule society wants me to be, and I have more than enough free time to do whatever I want. Yeah, I am not married, nor do I bother with relationships :)
