Courteney (court4reel) | 55 comments This is very vague and I'm sorry about that, but it's about a blacksmith that's teaching his son to be a blacksmith and the father refuses to make weapons because he used to be a soldier of some type and doesn't like the violence weapons are used for. The father is the best blacksmith in the land and so the king comes to him with an offer to make a sword, but the father refuses and so the king locks him up. The son makes the king a sword to try as free his father and instead things go very badly and he starts a battle between the king and some ancient tribe living in the hills. The young blacksmith boy falls in love with the princess. The father has songs and "spells" sort of to help with the smithing, and it's an important part of the book because the songs or spells are what allow the smith to make whatever he's making properly.

Elizabeth (fantasynerd365) This sounds very familiar to me....don't know what it is but the plot sounds like something I've read.

Courteney (court4reel) | 55 comments I read this just a couple years ago, but I'm
Fairly certain it was an older book then. Maybe from the 80's or 90's?

Rob | 83 comments Not totally the same but the main character in The Religion is the son of a blacksmith who, after his father is killed, goes off for various adventures. I don't think he makes a sword though...

Courteney (court4reel) | 55 comments That looks like an interesting book, but unfortunately not the one I'm looking for. Thank you for the suggestion, it did remind me of one detail: the blacksmith's wife and his son's mother is dead, they've lived together alone since she died.

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments Some elements fit Forging of the Blade Forging of the Blade (Lowthar's Blade, Book #1) by R.L. LaFevers , maybe? It was published in 2004, however.

Courteney (court4reel) | 55 comments From the description it doesn't sound right, but I'll have to read it to be sure. Thank you! And hey, if it's not the one then it's one more book to read :)

Courteney, are you still looking for this? Was it "Forging of the Blade?"

SparksofEmber | 957 comments And if you are still looking, to you have any memories about the cover?

Courteney (court4reel) | 55 comments I am still looking for the book, and Forging of the Blade doesn't sound right though I haven't gotten to read it yet. I don't remember the cover unfortunately, I wish that I did, But I think the father had been part of the tribe that the king started a war with at one time and when the son along with the princess managed to free him he took up with them again to end the war before there had been much bloodshed.
