Unlikely Hero won the poll for our February group read theme.

Each member is welcome to make one book nomination for the unlikely hero theme by adding the link to the book title or cover via the add book/author function. Click on "add book/author" above the text book where you post a comment or reply to a comment, and it will allow you to add the book. I will not add any books to the poll that have not be nominated in this manner, including raw links to the book page. If you can only use a smart phone or android device to post, please let me know and I will make an exception and allow raw links in that case. If you don't post a link for the nomination, it will not end up on the poll, no exceptions.

The book should be readily available, meaning it is available to buy in print new or in ebook.

Books that have been prior group reads are not eligible to be nominated again. You can look at this thread to see a list of prior group reads.

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

You are welcome to post a synopsis with your selection, but you aren't required to do so.

The poll will go up on January 18th.

I am going to nominate PRECIPICE PRECIPICE by Leland Davis by Leland Davis.

To quote from my personal review of this book "What I loved best was the unassuming, unlikely, hero of the story, Chip"

I really enjoyed this story...lots of action!

Synopsis:
When risking your life for thrills grows old, some things are still worth dying for. . .
Adventurer, expert kayaker, and professional river guide Chip Wilson is wrestling with the recent death of his best friend in a kayaking accident when he's hired to train a team of former Navy SEALs for the whitewater rafting portion of an adventure race. But when he learns the team is secretly training for a covert mission that they can't complete without him, Chip is swept into a harrowing world of special operations and intrigue that plunges him deep into the jungles of Mexico and far from his comfort zone - where he embarks upon his own quest to become the first person to kayak off a mysterious hidden waterfall. In the remote jungle canyon, Chip uncovers a plot that leads him all the way back to the halls of power in Washington, DC, and over the edge into the life of an assassin. .

Precipiece is a good nomination. I've read it... unlikely hero.

How about an Old boy nomination (since it didn't win the popular vote as a catagory :P )

The Tightrope Men by Desmond Bagley

I loved Tightrope Man! Actually I loved most of Bagley's thriller. Great nomination Hugh. I'm still scratching my head to come up with one....

Tim The Enchanter I would nominate The Hangman's Daughter - The Hangman's Daughter (The Hangman's Daughter #1) by Oliver Pötzsch . Firstly, it is a good book. Was number 10 on my 2013 top ten list. The hero of the story is the town hangman/torturer/street cleaner. He occupies the most feared and despised position in the town and not the person you would expect to be fighting your battles. Definitely worth reading.

Patricia (pattipunkin) | 267 comments I loved Dragon's Bane by Barbara Hambly. Middle aged hero, not especially in shape. Old I know. Me, too.

If you're making a nomination for this, you need to add a link, Patricia.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I'll nominate Devlin's Luck by Patricia Bray. It's about a tortured man (much of it self inflicted) who takes up a position for the sake of paying a debt that only he, with his strict code of honor, really sees as his own. The position with the kingdom had been reduced to a joke, but he tries to turn it back into a position of high honor. The self-inflicted torture does NOT continue at the levels of Thomas Covenant, although it starts there.

I'm going to add Running from the Devil, since the heroine is a scientist and now what you'd expect in an action lead.

THis is a good choice. I read this book a couple of months ago and enjoyed it! (keep your tissues handy)...(you'll need them to clean up the blood spatters on your lgasses as you read...or the white water? (action packed and interesting... I liked this one. Kind of a cross between Lance Charns Doha 12 and Larry Sealey's book. It was a good read.
