I remember reading a book when I was a kid/young adult about a kid(s) going into the jungle and finding a lost species? Maybe it was beasts/monsters? I swear the title included the words "mist". I can't remember how the child(ren) ended up in the jungle. It might have been classified as adventure fantasy?

I remember the book was hardcover and had those pages that were cut at different depths to make it feel fancier/old style. The cover just had a picture of a misty jungle.
