SOLVED. Convict sent to Italy [s]

Protagonist is a convict who was serving time in jail for some white-collar crime (swindling or stealing some information). He was suspected of stowing away information that would be detrimental to a certain corrupted group of authories (a diskett perhaps since the book is really old). So the higher-ups devised a plan to get the him to hand over the stuff.

They sent someone to break him out of jail on the pretext that they are actually saving him from some third party who wants him dead. To do so, they spirit the protagonist to Italy and made him learn Italian. They also cut off his all his electronic communication (computer, cellphones)

To shake him up, they staged an attempt on his life. Later, for some reason, he request to change his Italian teacher and they got him a female teacher. Eventually he was involved in a relationship with his teacher.

Then somehow, he managed to contact his son to send him a cellphone and laptop unbeknownst to those keeping tabs on him. He did some stuff (transfer money or something) then finally contacted his son that he will be returning to his country with the evidence.

He told Italian teacher the truth and the lady lent him her bedridden father's passport. His last phone call to his son was tapped and his son's house was bugged. The so-called authorities then knew he's en route back to his country but no idea who or where he will be meeting.

Protagonist had actually arranged a meeting with secret service or some agent. Handed over the evidence and a lump sum of money for his son. Then proceeded to flew back to Italy to spend his remaining life with his beloved Italian teacher.
