Why is everyone so mad about the ending of this book?

Jennifer I have never understood why people are so angry with the ending of Mockingjay. I for one loved the end of this book and wouldn't want it any other way. Besides those who are Gale lovers and wanted Katniss to be with Gale, why are people so mad? Is it because Finnick died? Or did you expect that happen in Catching Fire. Or is it because Prim died? What was so bad about this ending that people are so upset?

Carly I have no idea why people hated the ending. I for one liked it. I guess people were expecting a happy ending where everyone survives, but this is a book about war and rebellion. There should not be a 100 percent happy ending.

Carlos Mejia I wouldn't say people hated the ending per say but rather we were expecting to be part of the action, to be in the middle of the war, to feel excited in a hunger games kind-of scenario but every time something great happened we were cut to Katniss in the hospital with people explaining what happened. It was less action packed and more Katniss feeling confused and sad compared to the other books. Some deaths were unnecessary too.

Jennifer Carly wrote: "I have no idea why people hated the ending. I for one liked it. I guess people were expecting a happy ending where everyone survives, but this is a book about war and rebellion. There should not be..."

Most likely but no matter how Suzanne Collins wrote the ending someone will be mad

Kristine Because it's not the ending they wanted.

Molly I know my friends hated the ending because it doesn't really describe the war at the end very well? And the fact Prim dies, too, I know that pissed a lot of people off. All in all, the ending wasn't ideal for me, but I'd rather it be like this than totally happy.

Kathleen To me, the worst part of the whole series was Katniss voting to continue the Games, with children from The Capitol. And, yes, it's because it's not what I wanted to happen.

Kristine Kathleen, I suspect you've missed the reason why Katniss voted the way she did.

It was to make Coin trust her. Boggs said to Katniss that Coin would perceive Katniss as a threat if she didn't believe that she had her support. It may even have been a test. Note how Haymitch says 'I'm with the Mockingjay' rather than saying 'I'm with Katniss' or even a simply yes. That suggests that he senses that Katniss has an ulterior motive for voting yes and she has his support.

And then Katniss kills Coin. It's not clear when that decision is made but would Coin have felt safe with an armed Katniss nearby if she thought Katniss was against her?

Nurlely My only complaint about the ending is that it can use a few pages before it comes to the Epilogue. But I think Ms Collins wrote it the way it should be and I love the Epilogue.

Why people don't like it? Because they have their own expectations of what should happen to each character and are upset because they don't get that.
Some people do have the tendency to re-write a book to their own liking.. ;)

Kristine I've been throwing this particular fan fiction around a bit lately but it's well done for its type and can provide closure for anyone who wanted to know more about how Katniss and Peeta 'grow together'. I too, would have liked a bit more from SC about it. Try it. It's good.

Amber For me personally I would have love to read more about how Katniss finally got her head out of her butt and did right by Peta. An epilogue that consisted of a few pages of exposition and no real conversation was a let down. Everything else seemed a little rushed, like maybe she couldn't decide who she wanted dead so she just pulled names out of hat. I didn't think it was necessary to kill Finnick or Prim for the story to have impact but I can see why she did it.

message 12: by Leigh (new)

Leigh I think readers are irritated by the ending because it felt rushed and so many characters died, it felt like a bloodbath. Katniss is neurotic and disagreeable, and the whole ending just felt forced, awkward and odd.I love the series, but yeah. The ending is it's weakest point.

Kristine Prim's death led to the events in which Katniss killed Coin. This achieved the end of the Games and a stable government.

Thank you for sharing this with me I am really enjoying reading this.

Ashley I LOVED THIS ENDING! and think it was a perfect ending for this book ! <3

You're welcome.

DeepTiNkEr5 Look, I have no problem with this ending. The ending of Mockingjay made perfect sense to me, it might be a little dark but it makes sense! She was happy in the end with her children playing on the "ashes" of her people.

AgCl i actually liked the ending, i didn't feel that it was rushed or anything, the deaths made the horridness of the situation more real. If nobody important died those mutts would've just looked like a joke, all bark and no bite. A blow by blow account of the war from Katniss pov would've been lame. I think her being injured and confused showed that she was human and not some frigging Mary Sue.

NoraReads Finnick's death broke my heart. But I liked the ending, I mean, come on guys! you were not expecting a 100 percent happy ending to this book were you? it would not make sense because the circumstances have been horrible throughout the whole book with all the wars between the capitol and the rebels .We cant just expect that the war will be over without any deaths, especially the characters we dearly love to make it more "realistic" and very emotional. And that made it a heart wrenching book, but it was a semi-happy ending, which made sense.

message 20: by Raly (new) - rated it 4 stars

Raly Dakova If you want a happy ending, you shouldn't have started a distopian book, based on the story of Spartacus :D

I'm not sure I'd be able to change anybody's mind by writing this but here it is:

Endings of novels, movies, movie series - they are what they are and nobody is ever happy about them. But keep in mind that the most important thing in any story and in this one as well, is the journey not the ending. The ending is OK.
And I am not sure why you do not take into consideration the fact that after all, life is hard sometimes and no matter how hard you try you may not get what you deserve. In an "young adult" novel it is kind of important to describe some aspects of life that young people need to learn eventually. Why not in this form?

And here is another life lesson: be content with the happy ending you have, because let me tell you, it doesn't turn out so well sometimes. I would kill the main character just to piss everybody off.

One more: if you don't like the ending of this book, don't read Game of Thrones.

That is exactly what I am thinking.

Tynan I loved the ending for the series, the not-perfect-ending makes it seem more realistic. In any case, the ending kinda summed up the whole point of the book didn't it? I mean, if no one died in the ending, than people wouldn't like it because it was happy-ending-only fluff. Any other ending, including Prim dying, goes to make Katniss who she is.

Tynan I take it you werent too fond of prim.

Hsudarsan20 I just really wanted Prim to survive, she is too sweet, but it is part of the war. :(

Tynan dont they say innocence is the first thing lost in war? maybe prim was a representation of that...

when i first started reading Hunger Games , by the time i got to the end of the second book i was kind of hoping for a happy ending. It was depressing and sad seeing everyone all torn up and battered. And Finnick!! omg . I cant believe they killed my future husband!!!:p how poposterous!! And Peeta is forever ruined.

Hayley Jennifer wrote: "I have never understood why people are so angry with the ending of Mockingjay. I for one loved the end of this book and wouldn't want it any other way. Besides those who are Gale lovers and wanted ..."

no matter what way the book ended some people are gonna end up hating something about it even if it had a somewhat happy ending , its about war and rebellion its showing how much can be lost, with the deaths of certain characters yes I was sad but u cant change it . The book would have been a lot worst if it was " they all lived happily ever after they end "

Kathleen Kristine wrote: "Kathleen, I suspect you've missed the reason why Katniss voted the way she did.

You may be right. I don't own a copy, so I can't check.

I agree with Leigh.

Tynan I think Katniss seemed so neurotic because she had PTSD and her world is crumbling around her. Most people would be messed up if they experienced what she did. Also, the story is basically a war, so there is going to be lots of killing and it won't be pretty.

message 33: by Adam (new) - rated it 4 stars

Adam Bender Overall, I liked the ending. I thought it was refreshingly realistic for a book marked Young Adult to leave the characters with post-traumatic stress disorder. You just wouldn't recover completely after fighting in two Hunger Games and a war.

Michaela I loved the ending, all those people dying, because thats how it is in war. Even those you like die.

What i can understand is how some people thought it was too much of a happy end Peeta and Katniss with their children. But as i read it, i saw no happy ending there, just Katniss choosing the person she could somewhat imagine to live with and being persuaded to have children in the end. Had some pretty long discussions about that with my friends :D

Jennifer Exactly the reason I posted this forum was responses like yours Michaela this is so true.

Rebekah Hawkins Leigh wrote: "I think readers are irritated by the ending because it felt rushed and so many characters died, it felt like a bloodbath. Katniss is neurotic and disagreeable, and the whole ending just felt forced..."

I completely agree. I loved the series, but Mockingjay was my least favorite because of how it was tied together. I could even live with Prim being dead, because it was for the ending of the story. I could have done without Finnick's death, but that's just me. I just felt that the last few pages with Katniss and Peeta being older were very quick, and still Katniss had the same attitude about Peeta that she had had throughout the entire series. She didn't want what he wanted, but she went with it anyways because she felt like she owed him. At least that's what I got from it. She didn't want children, but she had them because of Peeta. Basically the same thing with the two of them the whole story. Peeta wants something, Katniss doesn't, but Peeta does everything for her, and so she owes him one.

Just an opinion, but I really feel like the better way to end it would have been with Katniss with no one. She didn't really want Peeta, and I think that she was just with him because she couldn't bear the thought of being with Gale. I mean if she hadn't ended up with Peeta there would probably be more controversy, but realistically she should have stayed alone. She seemed to be more of a solitary person as it was.

Again just an opinion.

Janessa It is not that I hated the ending or that she wrote it so we saw more of what Katniss was feeling; to me it was rushed. I felt like she could have wrote another book in the series, but I think it had something to do with her contract that she couldn't make another one or she had to write Catching Fire in a certain amount of words.

Janessa Rebekah wrote: "Leigh wrote: "I think readers are irritated by the ending because it felt rushed and so many characters died, it felt like a bloodbath. Katniss is neurotic and disagreeable, and the whole ending ju..."

You just summed up what I was feeling.

Tiffiny There were some problems I had with the book. Like several characters dying and Katniss shooting Coin in the head made no sense to me. But the very ending, the tippy ending when she's with Peeta I totally agreed with. I officially hate Gale now, I don't know why anybody likes him. Peeta is awesome, I'm glad Katniss ended up with him in the end. But like besides a bunch of characters dying off for no reason, I thought it was a pretty good finale to the trilogy.

Victoria Kathleen wrote: "To me, the worst part of the whole series was Katniss voting to continue the Games, with children from The Capitol. And, yes, it's because it's not what I wanted to happen."

I hated that part too. With all the stuff she's had to endure, I couldn't believe Katniss would consent to put other completely innocent children through that. Massively disgusted me, to be honest, especially as Katniss chooses Peeta over Gale and therefore peace over hatred - how could Peeta and Katniss end up so happy when Katniss did the exact opposite of what he wanted and continued the games?! That was the worst part of the whole series, and the peak of my dislike for Katniss' character.

Tynan Victoria wrote: "Kathleen wrote: "To me, the worst part of the whole series was Katniss voting to continue the Games, with children from The Capitol. And, yes, it's because it's not what I wanted to happen."

I hat..."

Yeah, I mean, I guess I can understand why she would want there to be one final game, kinda like a taste of their own medicine deal, but to continue the games indefinitely... doesn't that just set everything up to start the whole bitter cycle again?

Victoria Kristine wrote: "Kathleen, I suspect you've missed the reason why Katniss voted the way she did.

Literally five minutes after writing my comment I remembered this, I feel like such a numpty. But the way it was written still made me feel as if Katniss was trying to get revenge, the way she says 'I think of Prim'. I guess at first I thought it meant how Prim was reaped, and that Katniss wanted to get revenge for Prim's life being risked at such a young age and in such an inhumane way, but now I see that she meant it in a 'Coin killed Prim, I kill Coin' way. Still fighting fir with fire (excuse the pun), but far more necessary and justifiable.

Victoria Tynan wrote: "Victoria wrote: "Kathleen wrote: "To me, the worst part of the whole series was Katniss voting to continue the Games, with children from The Capitol. And, yes, it's because it's not what I wanted t..."

I suppose so. Katniss killed Coin, so I guess the Games were cancelled when Paylor took over, but the possibility remains that they went on regardless of Coin's death. In that case, I guess it would show that nobody can take control of a nation without doing evil or having ulterior motives, and that bad governmental control will always exist if a government is in power. I'm guessing the games were cancelled though, because that message seems to take away from the whole happy-ending epilogue of 'Mockingjay'.

Emily I hated the ending because it seemed VERY rushed. I really think she could have made the last book into two separate books instead of just rushing through the whole ending. I'm fine with sad endings or endings I don't particularly agree with, but honestly, I felt cheated.

Emily Leigh wrote: "I think readers are irritated by the ending because it felt rushed and so many characters died, it felt like a bloodbath. Katniss is neurotic and disagreeable, and the whole ending just felt forced..."

I agree 100%.

Michael L Wilkerson (Papa Gray Wolf) Of the three books, the first was best, the second close to the first and the third was so so. The ending with Coin was predictable and her character was more 2 dimensional rather than Snow's who was not as much in the book but was certainly evil enough that he was dynamic. I saw a lot of parallels to The Deadly Hallows and not necessarily good ones. And as someone pointed out, Katness was overflawed. At times you just wanted to say, "Get a grip, girl!"

AS for the epilog; yes, include it in the movie.

K Whatsherface I liked that fact it wasn't fulling a happy ending. and yes it did piss me off that prim died. but sometimes i think she needed to die. The ending wouldnt have had the same impact if she didnt. war is ugly, even when you win...you often lose

Kristine Since so many readers miss why Katniss said 'yes' to another Games, it appears that the clues SC left weren't adequate. They are there, but it takes a careful reading. It starts from when Boggs tells Katniss that, due to Katniss's influence in the Districts, Coin will see her as a threat if she doesn't think she has Katniss's full support.

Here's one of the best pieces of fanfic I've read. It's about Katniss's trial told from Haymitch's POV. It might give you answers.

Damiz I dont like the ending of the Mockinjay book... but the epiloge? yes it should be in the movie...

i mean, the drama its so damn good, yes there are some parts that are kind of "really??"... You can't compare the movies with the books. The movies are good, the books are awesome. The actors left to much to ask for. No need to write a 4th book...

I didnt like the ending but dont see other posible ending to the story...

No, I loved the ending. I cried and cried after reading Prim's death, Finnick's death, and her going mute. Atleast she can talk again!
I think it was excellent, the epilogue a bit too rushed. I love the Real or Not Real game though.
